Hi guys, the oscar I got doesn't seem to want to eat the hikari gold pellets i bought for him. he takes them into his mouth then spits them out again. is this normal? i have some frozen beef heart i will try to give him tomorrow, but i don't know why he won't eat the pellets. i just got him yesterday but he is very active and was swimming around the tank only after releasing him a couple of hours earlier.

You bought him only yesterday (or was it other day?) so he needs more time before he can become completely accustomed to the foods you give.

yes bought him yesterday, and he seems happy! sometimes when i come to sit at the tank he will slowly swim to where i am and will stare at me! lol when my dad comes into my room he will hide, but then he will come out again if my dad sits there for a while. im in love with him already lol.

Oscars are great at pouting over anything. It may take a week or more before he decides to eat the food you offer. Once he does, be sure to change it up frequently.

well today he ate some prawn that i put in his tank, one thing i have noticed about him is that since i got him, when he swims he tilts slightly from side to side sometimes. is this normal for oscars?

I'd say he is a typical sulky Oscar and just settling in. He may even go for a lie down in the corner.

I'd not offer him food for a couple of days and try him again then, removing anything he doesn't eat after a couple of minutes.

yes, he is eating now. he did sulk a bit today aswell, but he has eaten the prawns i put in for him. but is it normal for an oscar to sway or tilt slightly when they swim?

If you had had him for a while it might be a cause of concern if he looked to have lost the ability to control his position in the water, but I'm inclined to think its just part of settling in.

i will give him a week to gain control of his swimming - coz i only got him yesterday, i can only hope that he improves, if not will have to take action

You can give him whatever time you want, but he will respond as he sees fit.

It is an Oscar. One of the totally independent, contradicting, and amazing cichlids out there.

I have seen them lay flat on the bottom for hours. Swim heads down or heads up, for days.

Float flat at the surface.

Not eat for 2 weeks.

Maintain daily water changes and monitor your water, keeping all un eaten food siphoned up.
