Outdoor Pond A Cruel Mess...

I already saved ten apple snails, and euthanized a few fish from my relative's outdoor pond. It looks horrible, and I just happen to come home today to see there were still more snails and two goldfish living in that mess. I can't take anymore rescues in, I've got plenty ringht now. But I can't help but feel I should alleviate the situation somehow.

No food is really fed, but relative says that the decaying plant material serves as a healthy food. Now this is the worst part, I even saw a dead rat on the bottom, and it might have been there a while since it looked to be covered in some kind of algea or something. I'm thinking at this point euthanizing the entire pond would be the best thing to do.

This person doesn't even look at the pond enough to know how bad it is, nor can he admit he's wrong. I have a few days currently when everyone will be out of town, I can do whatever I can in that time as it will eventually happen from the bad conditions anyway. I know the snails may close up in these conditions, so I don't know what would be best for them. I'm thinking maybe they could be saved as were the others, but anything else I don't know. Any suggestions? ~Angela

My suggestion would be to just thoughly clean the pond. I dont think you could 'take' someone else's fish. But he problably wouldnt mind if you cleaned it. I dont think alge harms fish, but the rotten rat, leaves and junk on the bottom needs out. I note you are in FL so the fish may survive pretty well since temps do not go to low and bugs should be plentiful. Im in MO and have an outdoor goldfish pond. I hardly feed them anything durring the summer. If I do it just floats around and then molds. They wont eat it. They are too busy eating insects. If the snails are thick, thin them out.

No you should take the fish without him knowing- it's not like he ever looks at the pond. I wouldn't classify it as stealing- more like saving.

No...you should NOT take the fish without him knowing.....stealing is stealing, no matter what we do to try and convince ourselves that it's not....

(and that's a wagging INDEX finger.... ;) )

I actually don't know that I would do ANYTHING while they're gone... certainly not without prior permission. That would include cleaning it. You've obviously already talked to him about the problem, and he obviously isn't that concerned with the condition of the pond.

Unfortunately, as the owner, that's his choice and right. Just imagine if you were to take the initiative to clean it, and then something went wrong, and he threw a fit. You would be liable.

I'm not trying to say that he's in the right here, by any means. I think those conditions sound terrible. But I can only imagine how I'd feel if somebody, (well meaning or not, knowledgeable or not,) were to come to MY home and fix things how THEY think it should be, especially if I weren't even there.

Even though you're right in wanting the situation fixed, it's not your call. You might just ask as they're leaving if he minds if you straighten up the pond a little bit. Then go from there. And unfortunately, if he says no, you must abide by it.

I agree with Emg
tis not your pond so you shouldnt do anything to it without its owners permission.
you could ask your relative if you could clean his pond as youve no chance of persuading him to clean it himself.
you should definitely take the rat out though, thats just disgusting.

You're right. I'll just get the rat out and wait 'til he comes back to tell him everything. I just hate to see the creatures in those bad conditions. The thing I didn't mention before is that his wife is on the same page as me, so we'll see what can be done when they get back. As always, thanx for the advice.~Angela

just leave it, ask him if you can have the pond? thats what i would do...

Ehhh... And what, put it in her pocket and take it home? lol That's a funny visual.
