Going to pick it up tomorrow. I gotta wait until monday when I get paid to go get a new filter, and such to start a fishy cycle asap. I figured I'd get a feeder fish to start the fishy cycle, and then slowly add my fancies when the numbers started to balance out. Good plan?
What I've read, since my other tank isn't completely cycled (nitrite is fine, ammonia is high), I shouldn't transfer the filters to the new tank. So I figured I'd cycle the new tank with a couple feeder fish, and continue cycling the old tank (because my fancies need a place to live).
so whats your plans with the feeders once you have cycled? surely you would be better adding your fancies and keeping a close eye on water parameters until cycled. adding your current filter media etc will bump start the process. i wouldnt buy other fish to cycle the tank, its not fair on them IMO as to me that means you will allow the water to get bad which is why you wouldnt use your fancies. JMO but feeders are living and deserve a good life as much as any other fish :goldfish:
I agree, if you're going to go that route you may as well just do a fishless cycle. You could even put 2 fancies in one and 2 fancies in the other, they would keep the cycling going in both and it would be safer for the fish because the levels of ammonia/nitrite would be lower while still cycling.

The reason I don't want to do a fishless cycle is because of time constraints. I'm leaving March 13th, and I don't want to still be doing this when I have to leave, and leave my gf with the responsibility of having to do the cycle.
No, I wouldn't just leave the feeders. I wanted to leave my fancies in the tank they're in, and not re introduce them into another harsh environment, since they've already been through the ringer once. The only reason I suggested feeders, is because they're cheap. I don't want to spend anymore money on more expensive fish to do another cycle. Of course I won't neglect them, I'm not heartless.
I appreciate the help, but I find the inference that I'm just getting feeders, because I'm prepared to let them die, rather insulting. Either they'll stay in the tank with my fancies, or I'll find them a new home.
In my experience, fishless cycles don't take any longer than a fish cycle. Comet goldfish are often sold as feeders and they get very large! You would need a large pond for them, sorry I didn't mean to offend you.
