My guess is that you'd have to dilute the sample and multiply the result to find out what it actually is.

I wonder if it's some little genetic glitch in the makeup of these hybrids that makes it possible for them to survive in these conditions?

Even if it's something like that, the question becomes, "Just because we can do something, does that mean we should?" I vote "No".

 Is it just me or do alot of those fish seem to be gasping?

I don't think this should be deleted, in fact I think just the opposite, I think everyone should give their honest opinion of it then it should be made a sticky so that all the new people who come on here can see some reactions to somebody else's tank. Then maybe they won't take it so personally like so many beginners do. (myself included)

I didnt read through all the posts, but perhaps they do large daily waterchanges. Nitrates could be under 20 for all we know.

Even with daily 100% water changes I'm not sure you can keep nitrates under 20 when you have 25 fish in a bowl.

maybe you test within 5 mins of the WC ?

Who knows, maybe there's a 1000g sump on the original tank, might help somewhat...

I read the entire thread. He says he does water changes in the bigger tank (a 55g I believe he said) once a month. Somebody mentioned using a denitrator...

He doesn't mention anything about water changes in the vase.

Somewhere along the line, a couple of people mentioned that they are too crowded, and can't behave like BP's "act in nature". Interesting, since there are no BP's in nature - they're a hybrid.

The last two posts (flame) are from new members... Actually, these are a couple of guys from a BP forum that were trying to get everybody to go over there and do that. I'm glad to see that the idea didn't catch on - gathering forces and flaming someone else's forum is, IMO, immature and stupid.

I was thinking of a quirk in BP genetics that allow them to survive, but I saw Clown Loaches in with them.

Has this guy found some magical way of keeping Nitrate down? If it would work in those circumstances, imagine what it could do in a normal tank... You could be at 0-0-0 all the time. I would think that would be great for your fish...

Well besides the impact that load of fish has on water quality--they couldn't be very happy with that much space (or lack of space). Even pristine water conditions and constant changes wouldn't reduce the stress of living on top of one another. That puts the whole "how many parrots can I fit in my bowl" into a new literal perspective. Even an uneducated perspective can see that those fish are bumping into each other.
