I had to stop reading the article to post a quote from it...

Quote: "In 2004, the city of Monza, Italy, banned the keeping of goldfish in bowls because the containers do not meet the needs of the animals and because, as one sponsor of the law pointed out, bowls give fish “a distorted view of reality.

:D I need to see the research on a goldfishes outlook on reality! We should never partake in distorting reality for this fish.. Shame!!

......... That sponsor of that law must have jumped in a glass bowl and proved it...

----------

I have to read more of this .... :D

These animals (goldfish) are sold to zoos, pet stores, and bait shops, and many are doomed to live in plastic bags or bowls, neither of which provide the space or oxygen that goldfish need.

Who keeps their goldfish in the plastic bags?

Anyone?

I i just love these people...

doomed to live in plastic bags

Well ofcourse, like what do you all do with your grocery bags? I got fish hanging everywhere...It just seemd like the natural thing to do...

fish are “steeped in social intelligence
I can speak from experience, not one of my fish has EVER been able to hold up their end of the conversation....

use tools
Well, that would explain the screwdriver and complex set of drawings I found in the tank....Actually im using them to remodel my bathroom.

Machiavellian strategies of manipulation, punishment and reconciliation
It is all a RUSE people...Dont trust the fish, they are plotting to get you because you dont buy the other food anymore...It is amazing I sleep at night.

One general guideline is that you should provide 3 gallons for every 1 inch of fish.(17)

I feel so much better knowing peta is on this...So you can keep an Oscar in a 30 gallon! A 5 inch goldie in 15 gals!!!

If a fish seems sick or lethargic, take him or her to a vet.

Sure, and what vet might that be??? There are so many vets that take fish, I just wouldnt know where to start.

While I'm no Peta fan...I did read through to the end of the article, and they did almost a complete 180 turn. Not sure how many of you were able to, because some of the other stuff is their usual drivel.

They did recognize that it would be impossible and unwise to return fish to their environments and that people that keep them should do so in a humane manner...and went on to list many of the things that are put forth as good fish keeping practices.

I don't know if their comments on how wild caught fish are obtained are true, but I would prefer to have a captive grown speciman instead of taking a creature from the wild.

Is anyone else out there wondering what kind of tools fish make?? Will they be coming out the side of the tank with an ax??
