Again no need to be conventional! A hood for a 10g is $15-20 at walmart.
For the 55, 2X24" glass tops will run you $40, then pick up a shop light, or other cheapy. It doesn't have to run the length of the tank...
Throw in a sponge filter and you are good to go. But then again these are things you won't hear about at petco. When i worked there everything was super limited and conventional. No one had any idea what i was talking about when i reccommended sponge filters, or sump setups. Its all about power filters and plastic hoods there for some reason, i guess its whats easy.
Me personally, I don't like sponge filters but that a personal choice. We have a 30 gallon wet dry sump with a mag 1200, and a 25 watt uv serializer on a 125 freshwater. At our store we don't even carry a wet day and most of the people that come in there need something that is easy. The hard core hobbyist normally doesn't shop at our Petco so it is cantering to what the area has a need for.
The part about being limited comes from the fact that there is very little training. The specialist training is more about customer service then about products and proper care of the fish. For me, I work at Petco because I like to help educate people because it is my hobby. Most of the other associates don't even have fish, and to others it's just about making sales for that day.
When I talk to people on setups I tell people some of the options that there are. I have even told people to go to walmart to buy the lamp holder for reptiles, it is half the cost, but it doesn't look as nice. It's all what is in peoples budget and what they want to pay. I go to every pet store around and I know where to get things we don't carry and I have no problem telling my customers where too go to get a great deal. Petco policy would have you believe that if you do that then they won't be a loyal customer. I found out just the opposites happens. That more people come back to me because I try to be honest.
Sounds like you picked up a "critter cage" they weigh less and have the built in lid? You can def save some $ buying standard glass and conventional screen lid.
Yep the 10 gallon critter cage is now $39.99, unless you really need that sliding/ locking screen, then the 20 gallon and screen is better. I recommend the critter cage when someone has small kids and they want to limit access to the cage because they can put a lock on the cage, they have snakes or they have an animal that (like a cat) that can get in the cages with the cheap screens. I have the 3 critter cages 10, 20L and a 40B. Only the 20L is for a snake, the other two is for looks.
Sorry about your mice explosion Petluvr. I know the feeling. We have 14 dwarf hamsters and we should only have 2. The two we got in from the supply house were already pregnant. Now we found a male mouse in with about 25 females. Three are almost ready to have babies but I have a feeling that there probably more in the cage that are pregnant. :eek3:
