I have a 6 year old , 65 lb mixed breed. She is gentle as can be with people. puts up with anything a toddler can dish out, and plays well with people of all diferent sizes and abilities.
However she has become agressive with other dogs. (not going for a kill, but could definitely cause injury)
This could be for a lot of reasons, including , I suppose, early experiences, she was about One Year Old when I got her. It could reflect mistakes I made in training her I suppose. (i never mistreated her) I am sure it involves all sorts of doggie instincts, territory, protection, ranking.. any number of things.
However
1)
She has absolutely no pitt in her.
I am VERY sorry about the minpin! that must have been SO scary! For you And your dog.
I hope you don't blame the breed. My sweetlooking dog could have done the same thing if she were off the leash.
Please dont take this wrong, but maybe think about it:
If the pitt had been a bloodthirsty dog, your minpin would have been dead very quickly IMO. whatever else is said about them, pitbulls are Very strong.
I wasn't there of course, so i may be wrong. I just urge you not to add to the anti pit hysteria.
As nursie put it, we need to target the behavior, and not any breeds.
Back yard breeding Of dogs for fighting is disgusting and needs to be targeted and wiped out. targeting certain breeds wont help.
If it were up to me, there would be no dog breeding at all, at least untill all the currently living dogs were cared for healthy etc. (but then, im funny that way, i sort of feel the same way about humans....)
As far as my NON pit, dog agressive dog,
I
never ever ever let her off leash outide.
This is really hard because she loves to run,

and Most of the time she is
fine with other dogs, but it really is necessary.(I have long rope so she can have a swim and am working on a secure yard for her, she can jump a 5 foot fence!

)
:OT: I considered putting a muzzle on my dog so that she could maybe be off leash occasionally.(in appropriate places) She listens well and all.
But i can't get her to accept one. does any dogowner out there have any advice?
