hi my name is cris and i am new to this forum. my girlfriend and i have a hagen fluval 55 long aquarium kit, came with filter/heater etc. anyways, our tank has been set up for approx 4 months. we have recently purchased 2 german blue rams and 2 golden rams. our problem, is that 2 sundays ago, while doing a gravel vac, mysteriously one of our new gold rams got extremely stressed out. unfortunately, all it did for 24 hours was lie on the gravel sideways breathing extremely heavily. it died after about a day :( and then this sunday, when doing a water change, the same thing happened to one of our blue rams. i must be doing something wrong, any suggestions or questions about how/what i am doing to gravel vac? i do approximately 20% water changes

i use 5 ml of nutrafin aqua clear per 5 gallons or something, i dont remember. i read the instructions everytime. and the ram actually starts to breat extremely heavy before refilling the water i have taken out. yes, i have done water tests, i do every week. ph is 7.0 ammonia/nitrite/nitrate all 0. i dont understand whats going on. im not entirely new at this, but at the same time im no expert

is it possible that maybe im delivering the treatment incorrectly? i normally take out about 15 gallons, and so i think its 15 mils of aquar clear or w/e product you use (dechlorinator)and i normally just dump all 15 mils into my tank at once then add water afterwards

Temperature?

why do none of my other fish get bothered by it? think maybe the rams are just more sensitive?

i just re read the instructions and it didnt mention anything about when/how to use it. im actually friends with one of the local pet stores fish expert, and had him help me move my old tank when i moved into my apartment. originally i had just added a small amount to the bowl that i use for filling up the tank each time i filled it, then when he helped me move he dumped it in the tank and thats how i learned it.

theyre more sensitive. i add prime to my water before adding water but you should treat the whole tank when doing this. i think thats your problem. treat for the whole 55 gallons instead of just 15.

I have GBR's, Gold's, Electric Blues and Bolivians (I breed them). When I change my water I use prime but add the water to the tank and treat it with prime either while its filling or as soon as its full. I do water changes in my tanks (very heavily planted) of about 75% weekly. Dose EI ferts and Co2 and no issues. I honestly dont think its an issue to treat the water before its added. Done this for years never any issue. Only an issue if exposed for duration. yes while Rams are a little more sensitive There are other things they are more sensitive to. Ammonia, Nitrite and cooler temps. They get Ich really easy. Also if you happen to have any gas pockets that have formed under the gravel it can cause them issues as well. Ive seen this happen with Rams and most likely they had an issue or water conditions arent good. Whens the last time you checked your Ammonia or Nitrites? Whats your PH like? Also are you adding aquarium salt? Most Cory catfish and Rams wont tolerate Salt.
