Python makes meal of Maltese terrier

A large rot? not a chance unless it was caught by surprise, then maybe.
hmmm obviously you haven't worked with large constrictors.
An 8 foot snake can kill a 200 pound animal easily. It doesn't mean it can eat it. A larger constrictor a burm, retic or anaconda has the force of a full size buss on your chest.

When we get a new snake over 6 feet, for the first few months of working with the animal, we always have a second person in the room with it. Its always our rule especially all snakes over 10 feet.

But typically they are sweet and very calm around us. So we are able to work with them solo. But there still is a time frame of getting to know the animal and its personality.

I am not saying these are all deadly killers and should not be owned as pets. They make fantastic pets but if a snake that size wanted to kill a large dog, it probably could.

If a boa/python can eat and adult Caiman, as well as things like gazelle, with their horns and such, one of the right size to swallow a rottie could easily overpower one. But it depends on how hungry the snake is, a happy full one probably wouldn't even bother, one starving for a meal would not be denied even by being bitten.
If they can overpower humans, they can eat a big dog.

That's not true, it's an urban legend. Last time I heard that story it was a Boa and not a python. I think they talk about it on snopes.com.
Yeah this is an urban myth. Snakes do not go off feed before eating a larger meal. They would just eat.

Now I do believe some Num nuts would let their burm sleep in bed with them. I never recommend it.

Snakes will go off feed for months on end. This is normal especially during the winter months.

I also believe a Vet would believe something like this as well. They were probably not a vet Qualified to examine reptiles. Not all Vets are trained to work with Reptiles and know their proper care.

Call me crazy but I do love Olive Pythons. I am hoping to get a few in the next few years. they are beautiful snakes, i just love Australian pythons.

agreed... olives are amazing! and austrailian species in general, as you said..
and i just love their iridescence...
my ex and i had a 9 ft female.. she was the sweetest snake.
some people just really have the wrong idea about snakes...

As for the Dog, if it was mine, i would be upset. Mainly at myself for letting it get killed and not watching it while it was outside. But stuff happens, and its not the snake fault for getting food when it was hungry.

Small dogs are killed here more in the United states by larger dogs than they are world wide by snakes. Heck, dogs are killed by more people than they are by snakes in the world as well.

Reminds me of when I lived in Florida. Our condo community backed up to several small ponds, which there were alligators sometimes in. One day I walked up on a Fish and Game officer there to trap an 8 ft. gator that had eaten someone's dog when they let it out back. Sad really, but what can you do? Go out and buy a pair of gator boots.

Man that's a shame. Poor dog :( The owner must be feeling terrible.
When reading the title of the thread I thoought you meant the waterchange python  I thought it was a bit odd LOL
