Many plants can be grown on rocks and driftwood. Some can be grown on a dowel. Java fern can be tied on with thread and eventually the roots will grow and entangle together.
But why on a dowel?
Now if you want to rescape your tank you'll have some plants that will not have to be uprooted. The height can be set by the length of the dowel. A stainless steel screw and washer can be installed in the bottom of the dowel to help with anchoring in the substrate. Anytime you need to move it or put it in another tank it's ready to go.
I tried this with some crypts that were all together in a bunch too. I sharpened a dowel in a pencil sharpener and drove it up through the root ball.

wow! Heavy............

Wow... I'm definitely gonna try this one in my 30. Am needing a pop of height in there and this might be the perfect solution. Thanks again Ken :grinyes:

Thanks for all the kind words. I'll try to get a picture up soon. My home is in turmoil at the moment. The floors are being stripped and finished.

I can't wait to try this in my 65 gal hex. It sprung a leak and I am in the process of resealing. I might actually get plants to live in it now. I can't put most plants on the bottom of the tank because I can't get enough light down there (29" tall). Now I can elevate the plants some and just hide the dowel.

Here is a Java fern on a chopstick. I pulled it up so the stick is exposed.
