thanks for the tip Que. Having had to start a siphon by sucking on a hose to transfer gas many times in the past, I'll taste aquarium water any day plus it's only fair to the fish that live in it that you get a taste every now and then!
I realized I could use the turkey baster as a small pump to get the siphon started (I use the baster to remove uneaten food). Your tip is still greatly appreciated, though, because now I have one less element to fumble with. I've tasted my fair share of tank water but really, I don't mind
i was doing the yank up and down really fast that the package told me to do.. but that water in the AQ would really get to moving around and would always kick up major dust..
Great tip Q! I'll have to try that this weekend. I'll second your post pik01 - I've found a turkey baster to be absolutely the most useful multi-tasker in my fishy bucket, including preventing me from ever having tasted the water in any of my tanks!
my gravel vac has a check valve-type thing in it that keeps the water from flowing back into the tank. i just shake the vac part in the water a couple times and then BAM...it goes.
