Quality cat food thread

From what I have read as well is that Corn is one of the leading causes of Allergies in people. It changes the animal's PH and that causes the funky stuff with thier dander.
That probably explains why Kahless had so many problems with his skin. The top two ingredients in Scient Diet Maintenance are chicken and corn meal.

Not to mention that they use BHA and BHT as preservatives, known cancer causing agents.

Did I mention that I also lost a dog to cancer that had been fed that stuff from day one? :rant2:

Okay, no one start hating here, but my cats LOVE LOVE LOVE Fancy Feast's Flaked Fish and Shrimp. There are literally whole sections of fish in it, cross sections where you can see the spine, then meat, then skin...like little coins. It grosses me out, but they love it. There's also an occasional fish head (mmm bones and brain) and there are whole little baby shrimp in it. It smells quite strong, but not in a bad way...smells like healthy fish oil. First three ingredients are Ocean Fish, Fish broth, and Shrimp. They also like some of the filets ones.

Of course, the canned food is a supplement to what they eat for dry food. They eat just under half a can of fancy feast 5 times a week or so (ie, they share a can).

I think canned food is an important part of the cat's diet. But hey.

Leopardess,

I've actually stood in the grocery store and read ALL the labels on the canned cat foods there. Fancy Feast is, IMO, the BEST "grocery-type" cat food I have seen.

It's far above Nine Lives, Iams, Friskies, Meow Mix and all that junk. So, IMO, if you *have* to buy something in the grocery store and they don't carry the "good" stuff, Fancy Feast is best.

Just my 2 cents

I just think that some of you guys are overdoing it with the food. Our cats are not wild animals, they never have been. You can keep them healthy with most generic foods. There are some horrible brands out there---Old Roy, for example that should just be taken off of the market. Most of the foods have been tested and are proven safe for consumption. I know yall dont like Purina apparently but I have used it for years with no ill-effects. No cancer in young animals, no digestive problems, hairball problems...any of that. All I am saying, is that you dont have to pay an arm and a leg to feed your pets. Not that they arent worth it, but they are not wild and do not need to be fed as if they are. Also, if I were to feed my cats soft food, which i had to do when Morpheus was sick, they get runny stools, which is no fun for anybody.

i feed my cat "Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul" adult cat formula. and i feed my rats their senior dog formula, along with an organic gran mix. their products are well priced, only about $20 for an 18 pound bag of cat food. kitten food is a little bit more, and the dog food is less, since the price is based on how much proteine is contained in the food. the price is comparable with Iams, but this stuff is MUCH better for them.

this is the ingredients in their adult cat formula

Chicken, Salmon, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, whole grain white rice, potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, turkey, duck, flaxseed, egg product, natural chicken flavor, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, kelp, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, methionine, potassium chloride, taurine, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, niacin, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Crude Protein 30% minimum
Crude Fat 20% minimum
Crude Fiber 3% maximum
Moisture 10% maximum
Magnesium 0.1% maximum
Taurine 0.1% minimum
Omega-6 Fatty Acids* 3.4% minimum
Omega-3 Fatty Acids* 0.6% minimum

also wanted to add that canned food is better for cats than dry. they just need to be fed LESS of it. it has more moisture in it, which helps with dehydration. cats are also TRUE carnivores, unlike dogs which need a mixed diet of veggies and grains on top of meat. cats do better on a 100% meat diet or as close as you can get. dry foods are by definition, higher in carbs then canned food, and carbs are the leading cause of obesity in cats.

however, if you feed a really high quality dry food, you can still have a very healthy cat. Innova and Wellness are two other very good brands that are highly reccomended if you cant find the chicken soup. those two are just a bit more expensive though.

Have you ever heard of Nutro? That is the brand here at petsmart that is supposed to be pretty good. Has anyone tried it for cats or dogs?

nutro isn't the worst out there, but its not the greatest either. i would feed it before meow mix or friskies, but i would DEFINATELY choose chicken soup, Innova, or Wellness first.

Well, I look at it this way. Most of the grocery store and PetSmart/Petco sold foods are junk foods for animals. They MAKE them taste good so the animal eats them. They are full of fillers and chemicals for economical reasons. And those empty calories are extremely yummy and satiating.

Apply this to people. McDonalds french fries taste so good. Why? Because they have been injected with beef lard for years. Many people live long and healthy lives subsisting on fast foods and junk foods. Some develop health problems and obesity. Others don't. And some people that take excellent care of themselves and eat right develop diseases normally associated with poor lifestyle habits.

So, there are alot of variables at work, genetics, lifestyle, etc. I am at a point in my life where I can feed my pets high quality foods, and I do. I haven't always. But I want to afford them every opportunity to live long and healthy lives if it is meant to be.

Just my philosophy and where I am at this point in my life. Thank heavens for all of you.
Take care,
Mary.

I'm a dog person..but the same people make food for both..usually. I feed my dogs Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers Soul...and find it to be a quality food. I switched from Eukanuba...and before that it was IAMS. I found it to be better than both.
