Question about adding fish...

Aright well I added pure ammonia last night to a concentration of between 2 and 3 ppm. I tested again today (12 hours later) and I'm down to between 1 and 2 ppm. Looks like I'll have to sit through another cycle

dont worry. itll be a pretty quick on. you already have a pretty good amount of bacteria. you jsut need to build it up a little

Yeah ... if in 12 hours, your ammonia was pretty much halved, the cycle shouldn't take too long at all. I would guess it should all be complete within a week to 10 days. You can do the shrimp method or you could do the pure ammonia method, and you should be well on your way. Think of it this way ... at least you avoided some potential future problems by checking it out before stocking ... better than stocking and *then* finding out (through loss or fish or what have you) that your tank needed to be cycled.

Cheers!
Yash

So how long would you guys advise I wait between adding fish? I'm probably going to add a clown or two at first, and then wait and see how they do, but how long should I wait in between additions? Thanks.

a week or two after your cycle is finished.
we couldnt tell you how long that is goign to be because there are too many variables. just when all your levels check out and nutrients are still being added and broken down.

No, I meant after the clownfish have been introduced and appear to be doing ok. How long should I wait before adding more fish?

It is always advisable to keep a 2-3 week window in between additions, to allow the tank and the params to settle down. Since both the clowns will be going in together, I'd personally recommend waiting for at least 3-4 weeks before adding any more fish.

Yash

ohhh. duh. i understand now. sorry about that
:)
Yash has got ya covered though

Tested everything tonight:

Ammonia - 1.5
Nitrite - .25
Nitrate - 15

Should be an interesting cycle, looks like there's a little bit of every parameter already

I couple more questions while I'm waiting...

First, obviously, this is going to be a FOWLR setup...what temperatue should I have the tank at? I've heard everything from 74 to 82...is there a certain temperature that is best?

Also, I've heard that bio rings/bio balls/etc. do more harm than good because they turn into a nitrate factor. I have a fluval 305 canister filter with carbon, bio rings, and eventually, nitrate sponge in it. Should I just take the carbon and bio rings out of it and just use it for circulation, or will it serve me some good?
