Question about adding fish...

I had scanned a drawing that I did of my setup .... the image quality is somewhat lost in the pdf to jpeg conversion. But you can see what it looks like ...

Nah go right ahead, I think I've had all my questions answered.

Hijack away! :)

thatll work fine for a refugium. if you want, you can even put the return in the smaller end where the bio balls are.
i just wanted to get a better idea of it because some wet drys only have like 5-6"s on that far side where the retrun pump is

Umm ... I'm not all too sure I would be able to put the return in the smaller chamber cos the pump, once the pipe has been connected to it won't fit in that small area. The other thing I could do is let the macro grow in the area where the sponge currently sits, that should keep it sort of contained in that area as well and I won't have to worry about it getting into my pump.

My, this cycle is going fast

Ammonia - already spiked, down to .35
Nitrite - going up, right now it's at about 3
Nitrate - rising as well, at about 30

Side question, my PH is down to 7.8...is that an ok level, or do i need to do something? If I need to do something, how do you change PH levels? Thanks.

that pH will not hurt anything as long as it s constant. but still, you should check your other levels that affect pH such as Mh, Ca, and ALK. what brand of salt are you using?
pH does tend to be low when there is a high amonia rateing so i wouldnt worry about it at all. but i ask you to test just to be able to elliminate these things down the line as well as get you to get a better salt if you are using a crappy one. good luck

I use instant ocean.

then you pH is probably always goign to be low and your Ca, ALK, and Mg is goign to be thrown off. i would suggest upgrading to at least the IO reef crystals.

OK, nitrate are up past 5 and ammonia is at 0. Nitrate is hanging out at about 30.

I'm getting a good build up of algae. How far along do I have to be before I can pick up some snails/crabs?

I'd recommend waiting for at least a week or two after your ammonia and nitrITE has registered a "0" for a few days in a row. That is when you can be sure the cycle is complete. Also, don't forget to do a big (~40-50%) water change after the cycle is complete. That should also help in reducing the nitrATES a little bit.

Looks like you're well on your way though. I know it can get quite hard to have to wait it out and just stare at LR and whatever critters you might on/in it while the cycle completed. But trust me ... it will be worth the wait! Just have some patience through it and you'll be just fine :)

Cheers!
