Recommendations compatible tank mates

The 1 I can see clearly looks to be a juvenile botia kubotai (angelicus). At 4 or 5 inches , a good size for your tank.

TY for replying! These fish are marked as juvenile clown loaches (i know they arent... its petco), $4.49 each (BUT they only have 4) ...this is not an established tank, the comet lived in a 4.5 gallon tank. for 5 years. in the tank for 15-20days, . test kit hasnt arrived yet...I went in to get a few white skirt tetras but these loaches just arrived. I got a bottle of tetra safestart today... should I get the loaches or better not to?

right now Im stocking nothing, goal atm is to get the tank up and running with fish that will be good tank mates to appisto c. or bolvian rams (Im 100% sure I want a pair of one of those species).

If those loaches are indeed botia kubotai they go for $18.99 at the LFS. Question is it i a mistake to make these loaches the first fish in a new tank?

Loaches are not the best for cycling a new tank...Did you use "used" filter media"? Or at least "safe start"? Live plants?

I know it's very tempting to buy bargain fish...How committed are you to doing all the testing & water changes that may be needed to keep them safe & happy? That's pretty much your call...I'd do it every day or 2...but maybe you can't/won't. Think hard & get 5 or 6 if you decide to get them, they really like a group, not just 3.

Stock nothing until you know what your water parameters are. In other words, wait for your test kit. As you've seen with your comet, poor water conditions are lethal.

.

The comet had 1 pot scrubber in his box filter, I moved that into the canister, I did use safe start, but the 1 bottle (20gal size, not the 49 my tank hold), as for plants I have some pothos growing out of the aquarium lid/top, with the roots growing in the water. ANd as stated, comet's been in there for nearly 3 weeks (so lots of half measures).

BUT I just needed someone to tell me not to get those loaches. They only have the 4, the rest are actual clown loaches which I dont want (get too big).

???My comet is 7 years old and doing fine. He lived in a 1gal bowl for 2 years, then in a ~6 gal bowl for 5 years, only had a filter for the past 6mo (didnt know they needed one), now hes living in the tank til I get some new fish.

Ive got a few tetra test strips, doesnt test ammonia, Nitrate is between 0 and 20, nitrite is at 0, GH at 150, chlorine zero, KH 80, pH I know is 6.95

The way you indicated the 15-20 days, it implied, to me, that the comet had died.

Strips are known for being less accurate. Get the liquid kit, test the water, and proceed from there.

Ah, I see what you mean hes been LIVING in there 15-20days so far.

Would mollys work with my tank list? Ive kept a pair in my very first tank.
Are they a better chioce than the tetras as a starter fish?
Are they compatible with dwarf cichlis, gourami, etc?
Do they nip less than skirt tetras?
