I have a 120 gal. and I have a choice between rena xp3 and the eheim pro2028. Which is better,does more,keep cleanest water,least trouble,etc.,etc..

I bought an XP2 a two months ago. Real quiet, can barely hear it running. Filters well and maintenance is easy. You just pull up on the handle, which disconnects the hoses from the canister. Clean the filter, push down the handle and it will self prime. No water leaks out either when cleaning. There are a variety of filter pads available, and the basket design is nice.

if you can afford the eheim, definately get as it is the best cannister on the market. Personally I mainly use xp's because they are cheap, quiet, and do a great job... and I don't have a whole lot of money to burn.

I wouldnt really compare the XP3 to the 2028 myself, more like the 2026. Youd definately need two XP3 on a tank that size IMO, but thats still cheaper than 1 2028. You cant really compare based on the flow rates, the XP3 seems to be way over rated. The XP3's also seem to clog alot faster than the Ehiems, and as a result the flow drops off alot until you clean them. I like em both, and would be getting a Pro3 but decided on diy sump instead.

I use an XP2 and an Eheim 2217 and there is no comparison. The Eheim is far superior but also a lot more expensive. I also find that the XP's need cleaning more often. They are both very good units, but if you can afford it, I would definately go for the Eheim. The Cadilac of filters IMHO.

Well I have both. My husband bought one and my father bought the other both as gifts. I am trying to decide which one to use, which one to return, or use both????

I say use both. IMO you can never over filter. You can then do a really good cleaning on either one by alternating the cleaning schedule. That way you always have good bacterial growth in one of them.

Use both. Use one mainly for mechanical filtering and the other one mainly for biological filtering.
