I used washed white sand from a garden supply place cost me $6.50au for a 25kg bag. You need to rinse it but it dosent need much and has a larger grain.
locally we have a Home Depot and a Lowe's right next to each other. Usually Lowe's is cheaper for my usual purchases. When time allows, I go to both then buy from the cheaper. I'll check Home Depot tonight. I got play sand from Home Depot for $4 per 50 lb bag. If I like the pool filter sand better, I'll replace it.
hey what color is pool filter sand I was hoping to get a whit or verry light color sand to help bring out the color of the fish. 220gal Cichlid tank whatttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the pool filter sand at Lowes for 6.00 for a 50lb bag. It is a light tan/off white ( a little darker than playsand). It does not need to be rinsed (huge plus if you've ever tried to rinse playsand). You really don't want a very light colored substrate because it will tend to make the fish display washed out coloration. A neutral gray is really the best. I've gotten a nice colored sand by mixing poolfilter sand with the black "marine sand" made by Estes.
I have been thinking about using sand in my tank when I move next week. My concern is that I have a 18" redtail cat and I'm afraid he'll have the sand stirred up all of the time. I'm afraid I will never be able to see anything but a cloud. Anyone have any opinions on this? I'm thinking of using pool filter sand.
