S Grade black is $30/50# at the only distributor in ohio. But that varies, used to go as little as $18, so not sure if the price is different in different areas. Yes - pool filter sand is (basically) quartz, but it tends to be a lot less dusty than playsand (I think it's pre-rinsed, so all you have to wash out is whatever fines are there from shipping damage).
