Sand substrate my questions

I have been thinking about using sand in my tank when I move next week. My concern is that I have a 18" redtail cat and I'm afraid he'll have the sand stirred up all of the time. I'm afraid I will never be able to see anything but a cloud. Anyone have any opinions on this? I'm thinking of using pool filter sand.

Not a problem if using PFS!

My fishies stir it up all the time; just falls back down to the surface....

hey moon man you gat any pics of that mix of PFS and black sand I would like to see what it looks like. also do you have to rinse the black aquarium sand first?

Sorry, no way to post pics. No you don't have to rinse it. Downside is it is the most expensive option (5lb=5.00). No surprise as it is a fish industry product.

Both tanks linked in my sig have pool filter sand in them (I think #20 mesh?). I rinsed it, it did not take much at all to get it clean.

Do you have any problems with it clouding up the tanks? and if so how do you deal with it?

Here is my 55 w/ the Leslie's pool filter sand- it is a fairly light colored sand.

PFS is quartz right? In which case it would be heavier than silica based sand and should have a lot less problems with cloudiness, is this true? I am debating on using it with my bottom dwellers (loaches) since 3M ColorQuartz sand is going to cost me a lot. But havent made a final decision.
