Some of my Planted Ripariums

Here is another shot of the setup in the 50-gallon with a close up view.

That's beautiful! I'm always impressed with your setups and plants. They look so healthy.

Your 20g has inspired me to do one of these... is that a 20high? that is what I have empty I hope its ok.

could I put some of my livebearers in the bottom portion?

Thanks so much!

That setup above is in a 5-, but you can do a real nice little riparium in a 20 high. I had this sweet little planting of stems going in a 20 a while ago.

So glad I found this thread. Looking for ideas on planting my 385 gallon indoor, above ground pond. This definitely gets me excited about getting it together.

I took note that you recommend a light colored substrate, and am happy to say that I have a keg tubs worth of pool sand. What substrate do you put in the cups? I have a ton of Flourite. Would that work well for the substrate in the cups?

Off to go dig through more of your threads!

Wow you could put together an amazing planted setup in a pond like that. Do you have plans for lighting yet? Will it get natural light, or are you going to use fixtures? I imagine that you might do best potting your plants in regular flower pots or pond baskets, although you might find it handy to hang some planters form the sides too.

Fluorite will work real well for potting up the plants. Any of various similar products, such as Schultz Aqua Soil, will do fine too.

I have lots of experience with growing these plants in indoor pond/riparium conditions and I also have some good sources, so I could help with that as you start planning out the plant selection.

There is a lot of crossover for plant care methods between ripariums and indoor ponds. You can find quite a bit of information on ripariums over at The Planted Tank Forums. Just do a search for "riapriums" over there and you will get many results. There is also a new Ripariums sub-forum over at AquaticPlantEnthusiasts.com that just started up but is already pretty lively.

This is all in the very beginning planning stages, so I've just started my hunt. We did a do somewhat of a planted tank a couple years ago, but I really had never seen or heard of a riparium before, so I've got a lot of learning to do. ANY suggestions would be very appreciated. I'll be hitting up the links you suggested to start learning more about plants. There will be a small amount of natural light, but I'm quite certain that I will be needing lights. The pond is fairly deep, which is partly why I'm interested in more what you have done rather than try to light plants 30" deep.

I think one of my major concerns would be staying away from poisonous plants. Some of the fish I will be putting in there may nibble on the roots and leaves in between meals. Ever had any problems with this?

I don't want to hijack your thread, though a few of my questions regarding technique and experience might be interesting to other readers. I'll PM you with more questions specific to my setup.

Thank you!

Well this pond project idea is quite interesting and I want to hear more about it. You could do some really attractive, fun and innovative things with plants in a setup like that. I don't mind thread hijacks, so please post whatever you like wherever you want.

What kinds of fish are you going to put in this pond?

There is one group of plants that I have found to be useful for ripariums that could pose a risk for foliage-chewing fish. Dumbcane (Dieffenbachia) has highly toxic sap that causes chemical burns...probably best to avoid this plant for your pond setup.

Here's a quick update for the 50-gallon setup. These plants are at their peak right now. I'd say that I selected a pretty good combination for this layout. I like the way that most of them are a similar shade of green. It worked real well to develop the background mainly with that Acorus gramineus.
