South American Paludarium Build

Moved my hyphessobrycon elachys to another tank, removed some wood.

Had a mystery spawning, I suspect brochis again. Shall see (provided they survive)

The eggs were without a doubt brochis splendens again. Got a good yield of them too. This batch will be sold once they're large enough, as I don't got the room for more brochis given their larger adult size.

Some updates.

I changed filtration. The old diy sump lost a seal and I took it down, replaced with an internal filter, but that just wasn't doing the job for me. So I caved and bought a canister. Just a little Eheim Classic canister, but it works well and I'm happy with it.

The brochis babies went to their new home yesterday, except 2 which had bent spines, so I ended up keeping them as cull pets. I won't sell culls, but if they can live a life without suffering I will let them live out their days with me as nonbreeding pets.

From the side its not very obvious

But from above, you can definitely see it on both of them, one more than the other.
1000150623.jpg
1000150663.jpg

The rest were good and healthy though and all went together to one home.

I ended up finding an oddball tetra at the store, mixed in with the rummynose tetras there. First glance seemed plausible to be a juvenile red phantom tetra, but after some time settling, it is not that. It's a hyphessobrycon heraldschultzi. It has too many anal fin rays for a red phantom, and

Lovely pics as always. I'll need to look closer at your latest tetra, it seems to change from each pic (shrug) I'm not great with IDing them. Pretty whatever species. I bet you're right

The faded colour ones are from when it was settling in the first week. It has since coloured to the vibrant orange with the black and yellow dorsal.

Few notes, I've bounced several possibilities around with some other hobbyists as well and the consensus was H. Heraldschultzi.

--red phantom has 22-25 anal fin rays. My fish has 26. Heraldschultzi has 24-26 anal fin rays.

Fin ray counts here, marked with red dots:
1000150729.jpg

--serpae have a long vertical dash humeral spot, not a smaller oblong dot like my fish, even at its size. Plus anal fin is different and they lack the yellow stripe in the dorsal fin.

--H. Pando was another consideration, however the dorsal fin also lacks the yellow stripe.

Of course there's other more obscure species, but the odds of those are sooooo very slim, from places not even imported from and documentation of those other species is literally only in scientific fields rather than hobby level.

But yeah, it took awhile on this guy, and waiting for it to colour up or grow (has not grown, so size wise it also checks out for heraldschultzi)

You have better eyes & camera skills than I do, lol. Thanks for the pics & dots, we haven't gone there or circling in a while. Ha, like old times!

It sounds like you need to keep your brochis grow out tank up & running. Nice you can sell them in a group. How many did you end up with beside the 2 bent spine 1s? The fry are super cute!

I ended up selling a group of 8, all to the same home so I know they're gonna be happy (can't get brochis splendens here locally anymore)

Oh, finally got pics of my one eyed ember tetra. I asked the store specifically to catch that guy when I finished my big group

Eques group. Unfortunately I found one deceased 2 weeks ago. No clue why, but they were full grown adults when I bought them and I've had them for 4 years, so it's possible it was simply age. I will never know.
This photo was a couple days before that. So all 8 in the photo. The one that passed was the big one 2nd from the back on the left side.

Annnd... I've had a surprise spawn of plecos. These would be hybrids since I've had Flippy identified as Ancistrus Triradiatus and Lorgie Georgie is Ancistrus cf Cirrhosis
20240715_151037.jpg

I'm leaving them to their own fates, since breeding hybrids was never an intention, but here we are. I'll likely end up selling any that survive to locals and be very clear on their parentage 🙃
