I set up a 5 gallon tank for my 5 year old in her room. Three male guppies. I check the fish often and I am the one to feed them but I don't spend large amounts of time watching them. Today I did. I am feelling sick and I've layed in her bed watching the fish a lot today. They are spastic little things. They don't ever slow down! I didn't find it relaxing to watch them. I remember my brother's fish tanks were so relaxing to watch.

Is this typical for guppies? They have been in there for a few months now and seem perfectly healthy. I've got some artificial plants and a few live ones. They don't seem interested in the cover at all, prefering to just swim, swim, swim!

I also noticed that the two that are most similar in looks seem to interact with each other more than the third one. They swim after each other and occasionally swim towards each other, never touching nor seeming aggressive, just like they pal around together.

Sounds like they're just being fish. lol

I had 6 guppies in a 5 gal tank in my room and noticed that too. and i moved 2 of them in to a 75 gallon a few weeks ago. And they have become very calm fish, maybe its because of the 10 rummy nose in there.

Mating and dominace behaviors, very normal (especially for a fish called the "Millions Fish")!!! :)

Exactly. I also find all livebearers to be not relaxing to watch at all, in fact they stress me out because they are always trying to mate (even if just males!) and chase each other around! Obviously I know it's their natural behavior, but it just always looks like they are so spastic and stressed. That's why I don't keep 'em.

If you want your guppies to look calm and relaxed, get another tank to set next to the first. In the second tank put mixed endlers and your guppies will look calm and collected. My wife says my endlers look like guppies on speed. I think they keep my tank from looking dead and lifeless. I guess its a question of perspective. Yes my avatar is an endler.

My Amecas and Limias are actually quite calm until I come too close to the tank and they know I could reach the food. Then it's begging time!
