Stand questions

Plans...I don't need no stinking plans...I got AC! :perv:

Ok, well hoping to get to the hardware store today and start things...wondering if my neighbor has a ban saw, if not well my Step-Dad does so I can just throw the boards in the back and run over there for a quick cut! For now, just pondering the dimensions. :)

Oh...I know what I wanted to add, as for staining it, is it better to wait till it is all done...or do it before putting it together??
Thank you so much Graphic!!!
I didn't use a band saw for the channels. It's really easy using just a "Skilsaw" Make the bottom and top kerfs accurate and straight. Run the shoe of the saw against a speed square to make it straight. Then keep kerfing the waste. You'll wind up with little slivers (up to 1/4") of wood there. Just knock it out with a hammer. Grain direction makes it a breeze. Take a sharp chisel and smooth the bottom of the channel. Tweak the top cut to get that snug fit.
As for staining. You can do it before assembly and it might be easier for you. Just stay away from the areas where you will put glue. However if you use the poly glue I recommend then you want to stain after. The glue foams up a tad and you need to clean that up before you stain. You could dry fit the pieces then using blue painter tape to make it easier to remove the squeeze out.

Woodworking show in Tampa tomorrow. Guess where I'll be. Only place I buy tools.

Well, maybe it is a "skilsaw" I am talking about....which is it that is on a table, and you can adjust the saw with a knob thing for how deep you want to cut? That is the one I mean :)

Have fun a the show!!!

Skilsaw is a handheld power tool. You may be thinking of a table saw

Yes, Graphic it must be a table saw. I just feel way more comfortable using a saw that I can just move to how deep I want the cut to be...don't quite trust myself not to mess up with a hand held ;)

Well, I have changed my mind on my plans yet again. I am going to make the stand for the 55 and (2) 10's, then I'm just going to make a stand for the 30. Instead of the other 55 and 40. I just feel I'd either have to make the stand much taller then I really want or not have enough room under to work with the 30. So now I'm just making it this way....

55g and (2) 10g= 49" x 13" x 27"
4 x 4's for the legs
2 x 4's for the frame
the 3/4" thick boards for the top, sides, back and shelf.
8" wood screws and poly glue to hold together frame.
2" nails and glue for shell

30g = 37" x 14" x 27"
2x4's for legs and frame
3/4" boards for top, sides, back and bottom
4" wood screws and glue for frame
2" nails and glue for shell

I will!! :)

Probably not a bad idea for keeping the height at a reasonable level. You should still follow the building procedure I outlined for strength and looks. I took a closer look at my bench Saturday and I didn't use wood screws but actually lag bolts countersunk.

WOOT!! Got my wood today, hoping I got enough didn't think to convert my inches into feet!! The 2x's came in 8', 7' and 6'...the 4x's came in 8'. So I kinda guess-ta-mated!!! Couldn't find the poly glue either, so ended up getting wood glue, and the screws are 4", do you think it would be ok, with the laps and everything???

I got my poly glue at Home Depot. 4" screws? Might be a bit long. I looked at my bench this weekend and I actually used lag bolts. Predrilled the wood of course. Wood glue should be fine. The glue joint is actually stronger than the wood itself. I just prefer poly anyplace it might get wet is all. I hope you didn't get pressure treated.

Should I worry about the screws being to long, I was just thinking it has to go through 2" of wood before getting to the other piece? It will be a couple more days before I can start because the stupid weather around here, suppose to have a rain/snow mix and will be cutting the wood outside so I now have to wait for the weather to play nice with me)
I was at Menards and the guy looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about the poly glue..(gotta love those employees) they didn't know what I was talking about one other time when I was looking for egg create for the bottom of a tank, took me over to office supplies LOL!!

I don't think it is pressure treated it didn't say it was anyway, it did say it was kiln dried...is that ok?
