Stand questions

Yea, 4 inch screws are likely going to be to long. You don't want the screw to come through the other side!!

Like Graphic said 2x4's are not 2 inches x 4 inches. They are smaller. I think you will be better off with 2 1/2 inch screws, 3 at the most.

Should I worry about the screws being to long, I was just thinking it has to go through 2" of wood before getting to the other piece? It will be a couple more days before I can start because the stupid weather around here, suppose to have a rain/snow mix and will be cutting the wood outside so I now have to wait for the weather to play nice with me)
I was at Menards and the guy looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about the poly glue..(gotta love those employees) they didn't know what I was talking about one other time when I was looking for egg create for the bottom of a tank, took me over to office supplies LOL!!

I don't think it is pressure treated it didn't say it was anyway, it did say it was kiln dried...is that ok?
Kiln dried is good. Remember though 2 x 4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5 and 4x is 3.5 square.

GAH! Yeah, wasn't thinking about that either (2 x 4 not really 2 x 4)! Ok, I'll get some smaller screws then. Not sure I would have the tools for the bolts to go that route.

I did want to ask though, since I am using the 2x's for the 30g stand, should I lap all the pieces on that one, or still do it the same as the other and lap just the legs?

With the 2x for all the pieces you need to do the true half lap joint for the front pieces. The sides will just screw into the legs since you cant lap them. Screw to the outside of the leg and use filler 2x to get the surface flush. Are you going to clad in plywood for an enclosed stand?

Ok, that's what I thought. I have a question though, what do you mean by "filler 2x"? Yes, I got plywood to put around it when done with the frame.

2xstand.jpgWell the 2x4 on the sides won't be flush with the legs so you add 2x too fill it in so the plywood has something to lay against. You can only lap the front into a 2x leg.

So I would be putting two 2x's where the legs are then? I see what you are saying, I think, so I would be making the top (lapping the 2 x's)...then put that on around the legs adding a 2x under the top and against the legs down to the shelf. I thought the sides would just go between the legs, but thinking about that while looking at what you drew...I can see where that wouldn't work so well.

The front 2x4's will extend 1.5" (the width of the side 2x4) beyond the legs so you don't see end grain from the front. The side legs will screw into the legs. The illustration above is a side view.

Ok. Now not to be a pain, just want to be sure I have this right. The front and back, lap into the legs (top and shelf), the sides screw into the legs, extra 2x against legs on sides, then the plywood against that right?

I think you've got it. But the front and back 2x4s extend enough to cover the ends of the side 2x4s
