Started Mini Bow 2.5 Pico Reef!

I totally agree with starting my own (look at siggy) Im not going to add any fish though. Just inverts. How long did it take for you to cycle the tank ?(sorry if you already posted that)

...nm I did the math 17 days.. so about 2 weeks.

That was my plan at first as well, to just do inverts. But I just couldn't resist the goby. I've had many people tell me not to, and I've had many say that it's fine. I decided to take a risk with it, knowing that if I couldn't keep my perams in line that I would find a new home for the goby. I have a friend with an established 75 that would probably take him, and it's not like the store had him in the ideal setup. Fortunately it seems to be working out so far. Now, I am not so arrogant as to think that I will never make a mistake in this tank. I have a lot to learn and I know that I took the most difficult route possible into SW. However... I've been absolutely vigilant about water changes and testing, and my nitrates have not gone above 10 since I added the goby.

People have problems with keeping goldfish in bowls (pico tanks) but seemed to have stopped caring about other fish that are put in pico/bowls, whether its fresh or salt

I don't mean to sound defensive, but I can't help that think that this sig is directed at me. Clearly I do care about the fish's welfare, and I am doing what I can to keep it comfortable. In the event that I cannot meet the fish's needs, I will find another home for it. In addition, I did research "nano fish" and their requirements extensively in the planning stages of the tank, so to that extent my goby was not completely an impulse buy. There are absolutely no other species that I would consider for a pico tank... I chose this species because it spends the majority of its time perching on rock/corals- its behavior is suited to a small tank more than any other species.

That is my justification- I didn't feel I had spelled it out well enough in my previous posts. Musho- I want you to know that I completely respect your opinions, but I just wanted to get this out there. Please don't think I am being careless. I appreciate everyone's input, honestly! You guys have been a real help to me.

Updates coming later, for anyone who is interested! :)

Ok, more updates as promised, for those who are interested.

I did a 30% water change this evening, then tested the water about 30 mins. ago.

pH= 8.0, right before lights out- this is encouraging. Hopefully perams are stablilizing.
ammonia= 0
nitrite= 0
nitrate= 10
temp= 78- still holding pretty steady. Good deal.
SG= 1.024

Things seem to be going well. My goby was VERY interested in more mysis tonight. That's encouraging.

No pics tonight, hopefully soon. Need to charge the battery on my digi.

Tested tonight, again.
pH= 8.0- this reading came a couple hours before lights out. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a sign things are stabilizing.
ammonia= 0
nitrite= 0
nitrate= 10
temp= 79
SG= 1.024

I'm really surprised with how well this is going so far! Hopefully it will continue to go this well. :)

no that was not thrown at you, i was on youtube watching videos about goldfish in bowls, lots of crap being said on how bad it was, but to watch like 2 white cloud minnows in the same size bowl and how people say how nice it was, i dont think that is right since they are active schooling fish. These clown gobies (as well as other small gobies) arent that active and can do ok in these small tanks, plus you have adequate filtration and flow and stuff while the picos i were reffering to were unfiltered bowls type things. Ive also seen like 10 clownfish in a nano tank (10 gallon) and people saying wow what a nice tank, the clowns will apreciate some anemones, maybe get like 2-3 anemones so there will be like 3 clowns per anemone, just not right. Then i see people who have bettas in tiny tiny bowls and there are very very few people who complain about it and others who say wow what a great bowl, maybe i should start one, a few weeks later that member has a small bowl with a betta. I shall change my sig to unfiltered picos if it bothers you :)

Plus you have a back-up plan which is great, whether it be your friends 75 gal tank or your 90 gallon tank that you said you got the rock for. That gives you jurisdiction to try things out as long as its tried out in a proper way. If someone had a 10 gallon tank for a baby pacu and said it will be moved out once larger, i say nice pacu, hope it will like its bigger home soon, but if its a pacu in a 10 gallon with no back-up/good plan, i will start to get angry.

P.S i can send you those videos VIA pm if you want but try to avoid my post on those videos, they may be a bit uhhh..... graphic..... Also sorry if you felt that this offended you.

Musho- I'm going to take this thread off topic long enough to tell you that I totally agree with you about goldfish in bowls and bettas in vases, and the like. It's often difficult to infer tone of voice and even context in posts since in many ways forums are so impersonal- and often people take things the wrong way (including me).:) I haven't checked out the links from your PM yet, but I'm sure I'll be pretty irritated when I do, lol.

oddball- thanks! About the pics, the tank looks pretty much the same as it did for the last pics, lol. That's why I haven't posted any for a couple days. My rock is starting to get some coralline growth, which is really cool! I didn't expect that to happen so quickly. I shouldn't spend the money, but I'll probably end up looking at corals this afternoon or tomorrow and I'll definitely get pics of anything new.

daayda3- I've spent an obscene amount of money already given how small the tank is. I've probably spent around $200 so far, and it would have been more except that I already had the AC filter and all the live rock that I needed (I was given about 80-90 pounds a few months ago).:eek:

This is looking great! Keep up the good work. I am really interested in seeing how it goes.

And I see(from your sig) that you are a fish and a phish fan! Very nice!
