Here we go again, my nickname on the other forums was "The king of rambling" but that was on useless stuff. I think dundadundun has made post about 3 times longer than my rambles.
I knew that, Hopefully I can get rid of my rambling status
Man, I saw your name as the one who replied and I was hoping for some sorting of this thread between the loach things and catfish.
As for everything else,
Really, I just want a cool looking fish. Catfish look cool to me but there are plenty of other cool looking fish that would probably fit in my aquarium with my fish. I just need help finding the right ones.
Why haven't you gotten your fish? I mean the kuhlii's should be fine in the ten gallon. Just get good hiding stuff or plants that are long and bushy towards the top so the gravel is always dark. Also pick the black kuhlii's over the pangio kuhlii's. I believe the black ones don't get nearly as big and round and pangio. My females would get pretty fat when they were bearing eggs.
nerdy... just pay close attention to the actual species.
for example... kuhli loach isn't just kuhli loach... loach isn't just loach... catfish isn't just catfish (goes from inch long to feet long)... cory isn't just cory... etc. ... and anything you see and want to ask about ask specifically... not just generically... take a notepad with you to the LFS if that's where you're determined to buy your fish...
Why havent I gotten them? Well, that is a pretty simple answer. I have NO idea what the ammo, nitrites, and nitrate levels are in the tank. One of the reasons in this thread I posted a link to birdsandbeast pet shop is because they are simply the best around me. Good prices on fish, and they actually care about what will work in your tank and actually getting the tank set up properly before adding fish. I called 3 petcos and 2 petmarts all of which use test strips to test peoples water. This place actually uses a good testing kit with chemicals and stuff. So, tomorrow after my mom gets off work we are going to go there and have the water tested. My poor fish have already been through one fish in cycle, they dont need another
Ok, with the kuhlii's idk if they have them or not. I think they do but I dont know. I told my mom about them and she HATES the idea She doesnt like snakes and stuff. I see it as an opportunity to get something that is not actually dangerous like snakes. She cant do anything about it (although I wont get them if she REALLY hates them) but it is my tank and stuff. I have paid for 100% off the stuff and my current fish.
My plan
2 guppies
6 neon tetras
? kuhlii's That is the one thing missing. I need a number of how many to get.
EDIT, just saw dundadundun's post. I plan on making a file on my phone of what you guys recommend for fish in this tank. I highly doubt the tank is ready by now so I dont think I will get fish tomorrow. But I will have the file with me. (It is so easy for me to loose a piece of paper or wright something down real fast and then not be able to read it) I do plan on getting some notes from what the guys say at the place and then posting them here for you guys to review before I actually buy the fish.
If they have the black kuhlii get 5-6. The stripey ones that I showed you in my vid (pangio kuhlii) 4-5. Make sure you do buy a test kit to keep an eye on nitrate levels in the 10g. These guys can be messy eaters when it comes to wafers. And feed them exclusively at night when the lights are out or before the lights go on in the morning.
I will have to do some testing to day as to what I can do to cover up some of the lighting in the tank to make it better for those guys. Shouldnt be too hard. If all else fails, i can just add some lily pad type things.
5-6 sounds like a lot with the 6 neons and 2 guppies. Are you sure that is an ok number?
Btw, THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP SO FAR!!!! I know for a fact that if I didnt contact dundadundun on other forums (non fish) that my guppies and neons would probably have died weeks ago. Now that he told me about this place, I have a lot more confidence that if I ever need help, I can get it reasonably fast.
I don't think you should put 12 fish, regardless of size, in a 10 gallon tank. It is too much. All of these fish will mature to 2" or slightly less. Are you planning on getting a larger tank at some point? I would suggest skipping the Guppies, they will reach 2 1/2" pretty quickly. I would suggest getting fish that do not require shoaling; Platies, Swordtail, etc. You will get a variety of active fish with out overloading your bio-system. Just remember your fish have a length, width and height. So when considering quantities factor all three in to keep them healthy and happy. You don't want to be doing water changes three times a week.
already have the two guppies in the hex 5 waiting to go over to their new home. I currently have 2 guppies and 3 neon tetras in the hex 5. They will then go over to the 10g and my betta (steve) will go to the hex 5. I want to increase the neons to 6. Maybe just do that and get another guppy or something. I dont know if I want to take care of a bottom feeder right now.
If you are not ready that is ok. Just wait, no harm in that. If you want something to help clean up the tank you can add an apple snail or two. They are actually pretty cool.
