Stocking a 10g tank

.25 ppm ammo is deadly.
.25 ppm ammo is the first color on the test kit.
.25 ppm ammo means you have not established your media and your tank is not cycled.

"algae eater shrimp" is a joke! either their is an accepted common name, a scientific name, or they have no idea what they're selling... so neither will you and nor can you get proper guidance.

$70 for under-gravel filters on a 10 gal. is a joke. there's no need for that! take that as a clue if you wish what their motives are.

"starter fish" with a promise for store credit later seems like a joke to me too. seems someone's depending on you coming back with dead fish cause you're an easy sale. just a vibe i'm getting from the info you're posting.

<1ppm ammo and trites means you've got a long road ahead of you.

stocking that tank with less bio-load than you'll eventually be stocking it with and then trading them in for your final stock and adding your other fish means your tank will go through a mini-cycle when the final stock is finally added. you are going to still be cycling your tank with your final stock again with this plan. plain and simple.

if your mom wants to keep paying for dead fish then she should probably kill her own dead fish in her own tank. i know she's mom and you have to do what you have to do, but you should have listened and given it a couple more weeks and picked up the stock you need, not more stock that you now have to worry may be carriers of something your actual stock will be susceptible to. i'm trying to keep this as simple as possible for you, but second guessing me and doing things otherwise isn't helping you at all. i have nothing to sell you. what i was going to send you for the price would have merely paid for the box. i spent well over $100 for that stuff and instead of trying to sell it to someone else or being burdened with the space it takes up, it's going in the trash tomorrow morning. my time and effort even would have been free for you. i had nothing to gain. but if you'd rather give your money away to someone who's trying to sell you everything under the sun, that's your prerogative.

mg's message meant get a bunch of neon tetras... strengthen your school... and i agree... if you're going to keep neons in a 10 gallon, a species tank is best. you've been fighting against that, though.

screw $1.40 bio bags... a $5 roll of poly batting will last your for years to come in your tiny tanks.

with that, i believe i'm done. good luck, nerdy... you have all the info you absolutely need throughout the 3 threads i've attempted to help in. choosing to see it is now up to you. good luck, nerdy.

EDIT: p.s. start doing 50% w/c's twice daily. in 2 or three days you may be able to move to once daily. i might consider investing in dr. tims one and only at this point as well.

If you can't find dr. tims one and only try tetra safe start. Both are expensive but both work very well. I agree with doing water changes every day as you are doing a fish-in cycle. If you do plan on getting kuhlii's you will have to wait months before you get them as they require the most stable tank. Any trace of ammonia and they will likely suffocate (something i did for being ignorant with kuhlii"s).

I am really just planning on neon tetras and guppies from now on. Maybe in a few months get some sort of bottom feeder.

I never said I was going to get the under gravel filters. I am glad I asked about them before I went there. I dont plan on buying any unless I upgrade to a bigger tank down the road.

I will do water changes as often as I can. But I cant guarentee how often I can right now. (so much homework and after school things). But I will probably be able to squeeze water changes in just about every day if I need to.

Ok, what is so bad about them?

Would adding a second filter help me? My understanding is that the filter can only move so much water in about 1/4 of the tank. Part of having the volcano with bubler was to move some of the water on the other side of the tank. Right now I have a tetra pf10 that only runs at 90gph.

You don't need the bubbler, keep it though if you think its pretty I mean its your tank. But bubblers really don't do anything. Under gravel filters are messy and just a bad idea. Our modern Hang on back filters and canister filters do a significantly better job. With an undergravel filter, gunk gets accumulated under the gravel and like i said, its messy. The tetra filter is ok. Usually you never follow what the company says because the rating they give it is under optimal conditions while there is no media in the filter itself.

Currently my 55g is running two AquaClear 70's which is rated for up to 70 gallons each. You'd think its over kill but its just about right in terms of filtration needs for my tank. I think the 10g filters are the only ones rated right though =p

So getting a second ph10 wouldnt do much for the cost?

I bought the bubbler for looks with a volcano. But I think that after a while that will go to the hex 5 with the betta and I will get a better pump and some cooler decorations to do something other than just bubble. I think it is mostly for looks but it does move the water a very small amount.

That is what I thought about the under gravel filters. I like the hob anyway.

I personally would not get another filter in your 10g unless you want your fish stuck to the wall lol. My AC20 is really powerful on my 10g and if I lower the out take the path which the water goes becomes even more annoying than the stronger current. Basically the lower setting makes the out put aim towards the sand and disrupts the fish resting. I had to put a sponge in order to help slow it down a bit.

Ok, Then I may upgrade filters later down the road.

I am not one for fish in cycling but they seem to be doing fine other than the fact that the whatever type of neons are kind of lonly with them being schooling fish and all. But in a few weeks they will be back at the pet shop. Idk what they do with them after then. I decided I am going to keep the other two fish we got. (I dont remember the the name) and then go for the two guppies and 5 neons. Then if there is enough room add another neon. Or will they get all anti social with the last neon and never let him be part of their group?

Nah schools like it when you add to their schools. I had 3 phantom tetra left and recently added 5. They were next to the bag "schooled" with the new guys. Post some pictures up in a new thread so people see how your tank looks. We like photo's here.
