Stocking a 20L, Bolivian Ram or Pearl Gourami?

Yea, the gardneri is much cooler. You don't have to get him a g/f, I just watched these two and she was always near him so I had the dood go through hoops to get her out. They are often called blue steel killifish. They are the most common by far, fin tips can be red, or blue, or yellow, doesn't really matter. Different killifish subspecies look VERY different from each other, if it looks kinda like mine, it's a gardneri(the exact naming is mixed up quite a bit). They're not expensive, maybe $12 for the pair, often less, but my LFS tends to get very high-quality stock. I've had these 8 months, they live about 3-4 years.

Absolutely nothing special needed to care for them, other then a tight lid. Only thing I've ever seen them not like is other killifish. The 'kill' part in their name has nothing to do with them being killers, they live in puddles, their original name comes from the Dutch word 'killy' for ditch(or puddle). I think these guys are one of the more exotic looking fish that take up virtually no room and need no special care. Sterbai cory are another very cool/low maintenance fish. One of the prettiest cory, yet also one of the hardiest and most active. Very large ph/temp ranges on both of them.

One other cool feature of his coloring, the top, which you can barely see in the big photo, is a golden brown, probably for protection from birds/lizards as they live in very shallow puddles. When you look straight down on top of him in the tank he's literally flat brown, hard to tell from the female sometimes. From the side he's very bright metallic blue.

Just to make sure I'm getting this right...will a male bolivian ram and a male gardneri killish get a long okay? I didn't know if males that might be slightly territorial within their own species are generally territorial outside of it.

The male Bolivian Ram may get "territorial", but they are not really equipped to do any damage. They do alot of showing and chasing, but I have never heard on any Bolivian hurting another fish.

They occupy different parts of the tank and are very different, size-wise. I dont see them interacting much, if at all.

Hmm. Alright. As long as no one is terrorizing anyone else lol.

Better safe than sorry! thanks guys.

I had a tank as a child that had gouramis that terrorized each other until there was no one left. so if you can't tell, i do everything i can to avoid such a stressful situation. then again, i was a child and im sure the tank was not ideal either lol

I know this to be true. I know there are a lot of gouramis that play nice, but I'm jaded now.

Yea, as was said, males typically don't bother other males of different types of fish(those two aren't even close to each other). The three male platy I have are different then rams/gourami/killi, they just showoff and trade the alpha position around(been doing that for 8 months with no injuries). The fish you are toying around with shouldn't have any conflicts. As an asside, my gourami died yesterday night, no sign of sickness or anything. Looked great, then dead, heck still looked fine on the bottom(other then the not-swimming part). Go figure. Had him about 3 months. I looked at a few dozen others hopping around fish stores while out on the road working, didn't feel like anything looked 'right' to replace him. Just picked up a couple odd small shrimp(green algae and another tiger) and a lonely pair of rummynose from my regular LFS and shuffled the tanks around a bit, as the pandas were hard to feed with the betta in there, and I already know they will school with the sterbai.

I did find a couple fry in the shrimp bag, not sure what they are so put them in the breeder box in the 26, we'll see what happens, they sure are darty little buggers(probably danios) :)

Awww, I'm sorry about your gourami. That sucks! I hope your fry end up being something awesome! Never had the pleasure of raising any haha.
