Yea, the gardneri is much cooler. You don't have to get him a g/f, I just watched these two and she was always near him so I had the dood go through hoops to get her out. They are often called blue steel killifish. They are the most common by far, fin tips can be red, or blue, or yellow, doesn't really matter. Different killifish subspecies look VERY different from each other, if it looks kinda like mine, it's a gardneri(the exact naming is mixed up quite a bit). They're not expensive, maybe $12 for the pair, often less, but my LFS tends to get very high-quality stock. I've had these 8 months, they live about 3-4 years.
Absolutely nothing special needed to care for them, other then a tight lid. Only thing I've ever seen them not like is other killifish. The 'kill' part in their name has nothing to do with them being killers, they live in puddles, their original name comes from the Dutch word 'killy' for ditch(or puddle). I think these guys are one of the more exotic looking fish that take up virtually no room and need no special care. Sterbai cory are another very cool/low maintenance fish. One of the prettiest cory, yet also one of the hardiest and most active. Very large ph/temp ranges on both of them.
One other cool feature of his coloring, the top, which you can barely see in the big photo, is a golden brown, probably for protection from birds/lizards as they live in very shallow puddles. When you look straight down on top of him in the tank he's literally flat brown, hard to tell from the female sometimes. From the side he's very bright metallic blue.
