I find it easier to carry the whole canister over to the sink set it in the sink and crack the top that way as I lift out the baskets I don't get water everywhere. If you try and leave it full and then pull the trays you will end up with over half the water out of the filter and on the floor.

So, do you have to empty the canister of water? Could you not just leave it full and leave it exactly where it is (assumedly in the stand under the tank) and just remove one basket at the time and carry it (the basket) over to the sink in a plastic tub, do your cleaning, then go get another one, clean, etc until you've done the maintenance on the baskets/media - they just return them to the canister? Or am I missing an important piece of what one does when maintaining a canister?

Any reason why one HAS to move it from where it is?

Well it is full to the brim so when you pop the lid it going to over flow some and even if you keep it inside a plastic tub you still have that water to deal with. besides you need the old water in the container to pour into a bucket to wash your bacteria laden reusable media like blue/white bonded pads, even though your tossing out non-reusable media like batten. And you need a place to wash it like the bathroom tube so you can wash it out of sand and impeller gunk. Just make your straps long enough so that when you have disconnected the quick release valves, you can be standing strait up when you lift the straps, not bent over, its really light in that position, piece a cake with long straps. Sort of like a lifting an airport bag by leaning to one side easy.

If you have a medium size dog just attach it to his harness on the side and say hear boy! (just fun-in:laugh:)

:D I trained Assistance Dogs for a long time (dogs working with people in wheelchairs and with other physical disabilities like that) and they helped their person with the physical stuff he/she couldn't do. Trained them to do lots of different stuff, but no one ever asked me to train a dog to pull the canister filter though... Hmm. Maybe a new type of support dog? CF Dogs ... Canister Filter dogs... ;)

Even better would be Python Dogs.. Teach them how to work a python, hook it up, siphon the tanks, put it away, then clean up any water that might have hit the floor.... Now that would be great and I wouldn't mind cleaning the canisters then.:idea:
 
Gunner, I may have missed it earlier, you said this had a quick disconnect lever. From some of the pictures it appears that both intake and outlet come off as one assembly. Is that correct? No need to unscrew each individual connector? Is there a built in shutoff valve? I did not see one pictured.

Does it seem as it would be as easy as:
1. Turn off filter
2. Remove intake and outlet hoses via disconnect
3. Unlatch top of filter housing
4. Remvoe media baskets to the cleaning area of your choice
5. Rinse, reinstall, prime and go?

?? Okay now I really *am* confused. That's kind of what I asked too - I think! - and I thought I understood that you could do that, but it would be really messy with much water spilled. Because of that, it was far preferable to remove the top via the quick disconnect and then bring/carry/haul the whole canister to a sink/tub and THEN open it.

I feel really stupid - what part am I misunderstanding? :huh:
 
When I first looked ate the twin valve connector on top of the filter I though it was just a dual hose disconnector and that water might spill out of the hoses. But in fact when you lift the lever it not only unlocks the twin connecter plate assembly from the canister, but also closes off the water in the two twin valves preventing water from coming out of the hoses.

We are not talking about the lid on the canister that's a completely different thing. Look at the picture on the box and you will see the black connector assembly sitting in the top of the white canister with the two hoses connected to it and a little paddle off to one side that simultaneously shuts the water off in both lines and lifts the entire black over piece you see off the whits canister that stays dangling under the cabinet while you trained dog carries the canister to the bathtub , removed the lid and begins cleaning the canister for you.

So, you can then leave the filter housing where it is and just lift the baskets out and deal with them one by one - saving any hauling of the heavy water-filled canister? What about the problem of that it's filled right to the top and will get mess everywhere?
