Recently, I picked up a used 55G that originally housed a snake, and I want/need to clean it and test it for leaks. I was wondering what I could use to clean the tank besides just water to kill bacteria or whatever that might be living in it. I've read that you don't want to use soaps/detergents because the desidue left behind will be bad for the fish added later. Would it be best just to use an ammonia solution?
Also, when checking for leaks, what is a good method to use? I was thinking put in a few of inches to check the bottom and be able to empty quickly if needed. Then move to about half full and then completely full. Does that sound alright?
