Recently, I picked up a used 55G that originally housed a snake, and I want/need to clean it and test it for leaks. I was wondering what I could use to clean the tank besides just water to kill bacteria or whatever that might be living in it. I've read that you don't want to use soaps/detergents because the desidue left behind will be bad for the fish added later. Would it be best just to use an ammonia solution?

Also, when checking for leaks, what is a good method to use? I was thinking put in a few of inches to check the bottom and be able to empty quickly if needed. Then move to about half full and then completely full. Does that sound alright?

Get the tank outside to an area that won't be hurt if the tank leaks. Fill part way, 3-4 inches, to check for major leaks. Fill most of the way with mild bleach solution for cleaning. Drain tank and refill with water and dechlor. Let set for several days to notice any level drop.

When you say "let set for several days", do you usually leave it outside? If so, I'm going to have to wait some more. It's still below freezing at night.

Yeah. That would be bad. I could do it in the laudry room. It's lowered from the rest of the house with a concrete floor, which would minimize any damage. That's where I originally planned on doing it. The place I live is too ghetto to leave it on the front porch, the back steps aren't big enough and the back yard is nowhere near level.

Sounds like your laundry room can work. Does it have a floor drain? Or can you siphon to a low spot/washer discharge if you have to?

There isn't a floor drain, but it should be possible to siphon to the washer drain. At the very least, I'll be able to sweep it out the door into the backyard.

Just wondering is it a fish aquarium or a glass cage. I know someone that made that mistake. Reptile Cages are just glass not made for holding water. You may have a puddle before you know it.

Just a thought. Good Luck
