The 75gal reef tank cycle has started!!!!!!!

See, to me that is very unnatural to throw ammonia in a tank. I know it is a proven method, but just the thought of it scares the crap out of me. LOL.

I would say after the sand settles down, then throw in the ammonia.

Well they say it's the same as having a shrimp rot in there or have a poor fish try and live threw the cycle.

I understand why it works but when I look and smell a bottle of ammonia and think of putting that in my fish tank.. just doesn't seem right. I know, its the same stuff that starts the cycle naturally.. I just don't see or smell it when it happens other ways.

I am sure it will work fine for you and will be the easiest way to start. It has been a long time since I setup a new tank, and the only thing I did was add a little of that Cycle product and live rock. I will admit though, I was definately not patient and thew in so many corals early on (after the cycle, but quickly after) when I really should not have and lost all of them except my richordias and anemone. It is sooo hard to not impulse buy something really cool looking at a LFS but the more restraint you can show the more money you will save in the long run. Always write down what your thinking of, coral or fish, and if possible, take a pic with a cell phone or something so you can come home and research it. I have seen LFS mislabel fish and corals many times. Get advice about it and if after that you think you can keep it, go back and get it. If it is gone, don't worry, most LFS can get another one within the next couple shipments if you ask and pay up front. It won't be exactly the same, but 50/50 chance of it being better than the one you saw.

Couple of questions....Did you mix in the reef salt in the display tank yet? And also, when during the process do we put in the live rock?

I thought the process of cycling goes something like this.....
Live rock (aquascaping)---live sand (I read somewhere that live rock should not sit on top of live sand)---RO/DI water---heater, salt mix, powerheads---PH and salinity tests, temperature check---then ammonia/shrimp to start the cycle. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I would say if you really were going to do it right you would mix and heat the saltwater for 24 hours in another container before putting it into the tank.. but since this is the initial fill he is just going to use his tank/sump to mix the salt.

I would put the initil build in this order. But it really isn't all that critical which order some things happen.

Rinse dead sand and put in tank---have mixed and heated sw and put a small amount in tank to cover sand, then add live sand, finish filling---let sand settle for a day---get as much live rock as you can and push sand out of the way/install rock---wait another day to resettle---PH/Salinity tests---start cycle however best fits you.

If you really have good live rock I don't think it would to benificial to put it in a tank that isn't heated enough or correct SG. You don't want to kill off all the "live" stuff on the live rock putting it in your tank to early, nor do you want to buy it too soon and have it dry out. Best to run to LFS and buy as soon as your ready to start putting rock in the tank.

ya know, i have been reading and following your postings for a whiled now, as im waiting for my tank to cycle too i feel like im on "this little adventure" with you at the same time! And I let you ask the questions and take the heat for it so i didnt have to:P

Are you talking to me?

OK I guess. I don't understand why you don't ask the questions yourself. The people on here are for the most part very nice.

Update.....
The display tank is almost clear. It fogged up a bit when I took the filter floss out to clean it. Things seem to be running well. I just have to get the salt mix right now.
