Howdy all.........I have not read this forum in a while so I thought I'd offer a few ramblings on the subject.
Mathmatically, it's not just possible, but more likely probable that there is life, perhaps intelligent beyond the Earth. Too many stars and galaxies for there not to be. I read a book a few years ago that spelled it all out........written, I think, by the late Carl Sagan.
It's also possible that UFOs could be visiting us from other dimensions. In order for the math for advanced physics prove out, particularly in regards to space and time, scientists have to account for more dimensions than we can percieve. I forget the exact number, but it's somewhere between six and twelve. That's a lot more than the three that you and I are capable of being aware of. It could be that these UFOs originated in our own space and time but in a parallel dimension.
The theory of our descendents returning to study us is intriging............it certaily serves well to ease our fears of invading lizard people. The theory of our "creators" or "benefactors" returning to check on us provides similar comfort, too.
One of my favorite theories, though probably less likely, I learned through my father. I never heard it presented anywhere else before so I suppose it could be his own: UFOs could come from deep beneath the ocean. It does sound a little silly, but think about it. Probably 90% of the ocean floor is yet to be surveyed with anything other than sonar or thermal imagery. Water makes up over 3/4 of our planets surface, so it is concievable that we could be living right next to.......err......above these creatures and not even know it.
Consider the stereotypical image of an alien:
1. Large head with large eyes, often pictured squinting
Any creature living in complete darkness would require large eyes in order to see. Obviously, when "visiting" us they would be exposed to brighter light thaan they are accustomed to so squinting would be natural.
2. Pale pasty skin......often green or grey. Life forms from the deep or cave inhabinants often have little or no skin pigmantation due to lack of exposure to light.
3. Extreamly small ears, if any, or just a small hole where the ears "should" be. Sound waves do not dissipate as quickly under water as they do in the atmosphere. Because of this, sounds are amplified under water. Whales, dolphins, and other sea mammals, have "ears" similar to those of the stereotypical extra terrestrial.
4. Some depictions of aliens show them with little webs between their fingers and toes.............enoug said.
I don't necessary believe that this theory is true. It is fun to think about though. I do believe that something is going on and that all UFO sightings shouldn't be dismissed as merely military aircraft, weather balloons, or mass hysteria. The possibilities are endless, but until one lands in our front yard, it's occupant hops out and introduces itself, we'll never know for sure.
