You will find similar products in any local fish store. Although we find such tight spaces offensive for keeping fish, it is not at all unusual to see people do it. Most containers labelled specifically for bettas are not much bigger than the 3 or 4 cup volume that those people are advertising. Personally, I like to buy a betta only from the LFS that keeps one to a tank with other fish they are selling. I avoid the places that have them sitting out in little cups.

My fave LFS sells bettas in this long tank, about 4 feet long, but only 6 inches wide, 6 inches tall, each betta has about 3-4 inches in it, it's not the best set up, but they have a very high turn over and the whole tank has a sump with holes in the dividers so everything heated and filtered.

Personally I think any fish tank under 3g shouldn't even be sold, there just isn't the room for fish, some shrimp maybe but not fish.

I have always hated those betta bowls... Why do they sell them like that? Whi do they always put bettas in a teacup sized aquarium? I am serious, I have never had bettas, why are their tanks always so tiny?

Have you ever thought of the amount of cash to be invested for every betta there is alone? That should answer your question. Not all people can afford to buy individual 3-5g tanks for each betta hence they rely on bottles and cups thinking the betta will be fine due to their "labyrinths" and misinterpretations such as mud puddles. I do not mind them being sold in small tanks if the tanks are at least well-maintained but negligence on their part thinking bettas can even survive stale water and failure to explain well how they are best kept are another matter. Though the compartments would have been interpreted by beginners who do not even research before buying a fish as something that will be fine for the fish, the explanations regarding their basic care and investments prior to stocking the fish would have prevented this.

you think if I bought em it would count as supporting the whole tiny tank thing? I just had the best idea of a new theme to decorate my bettas 20g with, would look sooo funny these so called "betta tanks" in my spoilt brat of a bettas massive 20g tank LOL.

I have a betta bowl. I keep a DAF in it. It's about 6 cups, and has a hiding spot for the frog, and some decorations to keep him amused (not really...). Though, he's moved to a 2.5 gallon aquarium for the time being.

I don't like betta fish.

I was just trying to remember today, if I'd ever seen these tiny tanks before. The last time I kept fish was in the 70's. We had a betta. We put him in out 15g community tank, which was soon upgraded to a 27g community tank. The betta got along with everyone. We could only have one male betta per tank. That's all. Ours even got along with the gourami's but I think this is a matter of personality.

It never occured to us to isolate the betta in a tiny tank. They were kept in fishbowls in the store but only to separate the males.

Anyway, I think the smallest tank on the market back then was a 10 gallon. This was in Canada so that is about 12 US gallons. Perhaps someone thought there was a market for smaller tanks so started to make them. If newbies go into a fish store and see the 5 or 3 gallon tank for sale, then they would assume that you can keep fish in it. It's a fish tank, right?

Unfortunately, some people are not too bright and accept things they are told without thinking them through for themselves.

Someone on another board posted this link. It's an article from the Sydney Morning Herald. Warning - graphic content - hold onto your lunch.

Do you have this abomination in the United States?

That betta in an iPod is just stupid, what sort of cruel natured person came up with that? The fish can't possibly be happy in such a cramped space. Not to mention the noise from the speakers must be severly annoying, if not very stressful.
