This is a Shocker!!!

It's possible because there are morons out there that spread such misinformation about the bettas such as "they live in puddles" as their natural habitat.
I'm pretty sure somewhere along the way, the word "paddies" was replaced with "puddles" because bettas are introduced to flooded rice paddies to eat mosquito larvae and other such nuisance bugs.

They sell those stupid little ipods at Wal-Mart here. They only ever have about 2 in stock, and I don't think they've sold any.

Speaking of puddles and paddies, here it is.

Now, that's exactly what we meant by puddles in our betta dictionary.:)

yeah, i haven't the slightest idea how anyone would imagine a betta fish in a pothole puddle or something. as if bettas just materialized from water mixing with concrete.

I thought they lived in rice paddies, rice paddies are typically huge.

That betta in an iPod is just stupid, what sort of cruel natured person came up with that? The fish can't possibly be happy in such a cramped space. Not to mention the noise from the speakers must be severly annoying, if not very stressful.

That's an understatement. It's a torture chamber. I can't believe people buying such a thing for a Christmas present for their kids. What an example to set, eh.

Apparently one of the chains in Australia that were carrying them and justifying it with this puddle nonsense has done a backflip due to the bad PR and pulled them from sale. Personally, I think everyone involved should be charged with cruelty to animals and do a stint in a similar sized jail cell.

FYI.. they may be huge but they are shallow ans subjected to stagnant conditions as well as extreme temperature changes.. add to that that they paddies are not flooded year round.
the rice paddies are flooded from controlled water sources..where the bettas also live.(Irrigation ditches)

interestingly one of the lfs's here keeps the bettas in plastic boxes (about the same size as the cups you find) but the boxes get contant water movement from a filtering system designed for these small plastic boxes..part of a large central filtration system..water is dumped from above in small waterfalls..the boxes allowed to overflow slightly but constantly ..so the tanks/ boxes are getting 100% water flow constantly.
