My younger sister went to the town carnival today and came back with a goldfish. I was so mad(not at my sister or the fish),but at the people that ran the carnival. This is animal cruelty if you say so or not. My big question is that if its ok to add that goldfish to my tank?? Temperature is around 81 degrees roughly and all my water works are perfect. I'm afraid this is too hot for the goldfish. Is it cruel to release the fish in our lake??? Will this ruin the ecosystem? Any help would be nice!!!

yes its too hot gold fish need colder water because they need a lot of oxygen and hotter water holds less than colder..but.. i have had golds in my horse water tank in the summer and all they needed was a lot of bubbles and water movement and some floating cover from sun.. yes its fine to putin the lake but i would wait till its at least 4 inches so not to become dinner for any thing else..

Never release captive fish back into the ecosystem.

1. They usually don't belong in that particular niche.

2. They can carry diseases that have yet to be introduced into that particular niche. Think native Americans and smallpox.

3. It is illegal.

Native fish already have enough challenges dealing with runoff, direct pollution, loss of habitat and pressure from existing transplants. Your sentiment is laudable but if you can't find the little guy a home then you should dispose of him humanely.

[Edited to add]

4. The introduction of non-native fish into the wild causes reaction (and even over-reaction) by state legislatures into passing laws that restrict hobbyists in that state.

Your goldfish may not last FOREVER in 81 degress. But last summer my goldfish tank was topping 92 degress in my upstairs bedroom (no central ac) I did not think of this AT ALL when I set up the tank, I just wanted one in my room. It was basically 90 during the day all of july and august, part of may, june and september. I would just set up a 20 gallon for him and let him be.

I used to love getting goldfish from the county fair. I had one named Freddy, who died after 5 days, which was basically a miracle considering the shape that it was in. But anyways, back to your problem. Goldfish require a lot of space in their tank because of their bioload, so consider the room that is available in your tank. For the best end-results, its advisable to have 20-30 gallons per large fish. With smaller fish, you can get away with 10-20 gallons per fish. Regarding the temperature, it sounds like you are well aware of the temperature requirements for goldfish. All goldfish are 'coldwater fish' and do best in temperatures of 68-75. Though they can survive in temperatures from freezing to 80-some degrees, it is not recommended to keep goldfish permanently in these temperatures. Finally, because you do not know where exactly the goldfish came from, by introducing the fish you would put the other inhabitants of the tank at risk for disease.

I would not recommend releasing your goldfish in your lake. I don't think that the fish would do any damage because it would probably get eaten by something bigger than it within days.

Hmmm. You are in a tough situation. I don't really know what should be done with the fish sorry.

What is a humane way to kill this fish?

Well I don't want this fish to suffer. I actually don't have a nearby pet store... The nearest one is an hour away... plus i can't drive until August to top all that.

I would first ask around, maybe somebody will be willing to set up a 10 gallon for their kids or something before you put the poor guy down. I also think it shouldnt be allowed at all for carnivals to make money like that. I tend to win every year and end up giving them to people that dont win =X But i am over that stand, i try for the lizards instead! lol You cant put a 10-20 gallon at the bottom of your 55 gallon tank stand?

Goldfish would outgrow the tank soon though..I would just out him down.
