URGENT: Shark's skin coming off/infected?? Help please!

"You need to gather some of the rocks (I would say Softball size amount) and put them in a mesh bag. If you dont have a mesh bag you can use the foot from pantyhose or a thin dress sock. Tie a knot at the end so they dont fall out. Place the bag of rocks directly in the tank.

What's this for VivaLaVic?

And thanks SilverDollarMan, I'll try and hope for the best.

And I don't have a filter for the hospital tank...

Okay, thanks for those, I'll follow them shortly. About the no meds- the wound has kept spreading, from a dot to a full blown scar, so why no meds?

You are likely seeing wounds from another fish taking huge chunks out of him for over a week. You have given me no reason to believe that the attacks didn't continue throughout. Even if it was isolated and there is an infectious process, clean water is the single most important thing to provide to assist in healing.

I don't see any clear signs of infection/fungus in your photos; I see ridiculous trauma. He might benefit from meds later, but for now you have enough to manage. You can keep posting daily photos and get feedback for when/if to start meds.

Yes, but I think it might be a combination of infection AND biting, because it spread in a circular way, like a radar, first a small patch, then more rings around it, and then more, and then the skin started to fall...I don't know...I'll use clean water for now...keep posting tabs.

I see no infection. I have cichlids and have seen what they do. Those wounds are not circular like an infection would be... they are chuncks of flesh bitten out. If you have seen your cichlid doing this, than you know it'd had to happen REGULARLY.

THe bag of gravel is to help "quick cycle" (although its not really a cycle) the tank. The gravel or substrate in your tanks houses bacteria that helps with the cycle of your tank. Taking the filter peice and the gravel bag will help create a quick "cycle" in your hospital. If you dont do this, you may shock your shark. There is bactiria in the gravel he needs.

Jeez, I feel like a dummy. I would think that salt would help kind of like putting salt on wounds to help it clot/scab/whatever. I guess that's only for certain types of infections then. Well, I stand corrected, no salty-ness.

I hope your fish will be alright, after seeing the pictures I am very doubtful of his survival, but he might pull through if you keep to your routine water changes and separate the tank mates.

Good luck.

Continuous biting, taking chunks of flesh off by the others, that's what the damage is. Good work Vadar and Viva for jumping in so quickly with immediate help and support.

Danomind, you have your work cut out for you. Clean water, clean water, and removal from more attacks by the others are vital.

Generous offer Viva, that's what this forum is all about. You guys rock!!

Dano, I hope your poor fish makes it. Listen to these guys.... act quickly.... do your best.... you may save him if you work your butt off following the advice of Vadar and Viva.

I'm pulling for you and your poor fishie.

Thanks VivaLaVic and DrVader for everything...I'll keep it posted and hope this poor think survives...I really appreciate all your advice everyone!

Keep in mind that a lower pH (6.6) will help him heal faster if he is as tough as everyone hopes he is. What is the pH of your tap? Stability is far more important for him right now, but some peat added to the filter would greatly help him out. If he makes it past the next 3-4 days (I will be amazed) you can start treating him with some Melafix and Pimafix.
Definitely do not use salt with scaleless fish/catfish. The Paroon shark is a catfish, btw.

red, no worries my friend. Some swear by salt. Others.... not so much. I happen to advocate strongly against its casual use. This link is a very academic discussion (that was not accepted for a sticky :tombstone:) but if you wanted more info. its in here LOL
