URGENT: Shark's skin coming off/infected?? Help please!

Okay, I'm moving the cichlid and the other catfish to the 20 gallon quarantine tank, leaving the shark to the 260L big tank...I'm cleaning the gravel now, doing a waterchange...

Thanks everyone.

Dano, I think your fishy has a chance. You need to keep up the water changes. Let us know what happens, but dont be disappointed if if doesnt work out. I sincerely wish you had come to us when this first happened, at the first bite, we could have given you this adivce and these posts would be of his recovery. The only thing he has working agaisnt him is the fact that he has not been treated with extra clean water and has been eaten alive by his tank mates daily.

Anyone reading this: Whenever your fish shows signs of any wounds or abnormalities and you dont know what it is or how to correct the issue, it is a good idea to post ASAP. If there is no real problem, then you can relax and not worry, but if it is something that will worsen without action, then you have the rest of us, who have probably already made the same mistakes, to give you advice that will save you time and heartache. I know AC has done that for me.

Dano, Your shark will have the best chance with 70-80% waterchanges and a clean evironment. And its good that you are making a strong effort to help him recover. I am routing for you and your shark. This will be a good learning experience either way for you.

Keep us updated.

PS: If you put the cichlids in the 20: you might want to get a product like "Stability" by SeaChem for your cichlids in the 20 gallon. You can add this to a new tank set-up daily for 7 days to help establish the tank. It will reduce stress on your poor cichlids. :(

Dont forget, you can still put the shark in the 20 and reduce stress on your cichlids. No fun having all your fishes stressed out!

wow. that's some serious bite trauma. i will be watching this thread, but i have to say i don't think the chances are good for survival - that is a SERIOUS wound. as others have repeatedly said - massive daily water changes are really the only hope for this guy.

For that fish to survive it will be through the heroic efforts of his keeper to insure that he stays in water that is pristine. He can't take any amount of ammonia or nitrite in his condition. Can't be haphazard about it and it won't wait. Diligence. The odds are stacked against him with this much trauma, and flesh, muscle, and skin missing.

If this were a human he'd be in intensive care, and would need surgeries involving muscle and skin grafting. He'd be on O2 and IV fluids and massive IV antibiotics, not to mention heavy pain medication.

All you can do for this guy is clean pure water and relief from the abuse of his tankmates; as clean and stress free an environment as possible.

Those sharks are tough guys, though, and he may pull through with intensive care from you Dano, and the continued support from great AC pros like Vader and Viva, and others.

Stay connected. Other than having a vet in attendance you won't find better help anywhere. Post updates as often as you can. We're all pulling for your little guy.
