Wal-mart still sell fish?

I've bought fish from Wal Mart...before I really knew better. I actually still have most of them, and they were/are perfectly healthy. However, that doesn't mean I would buy fish from there again. I've just become more educated since then, and probably just lucked out with the ones I did get. The Wal Marts closest to me take....fair care of their fish. But I have seen some that are horrid. As someone else said, if they would just get one person with even a little bit of knowledge to take care of them, they'd be so much better off. Sometimes when I go there I wish I could get them to hire me just to take care of their fish. It would be easy once you got everything straightened out. I don't imagine it would happen but...I feel bad for the fish, so I want to fix them! :) I hate when I'm walking through that section and see someone with a brand new 10 gallon tank in their cart and some fish in a bag...I just cringe. :) But that was me once too so...

Yep. The WalMart here has a ton of fish. Goldfish esspecialy, probably 15 ordanas in a 10 gallon.

The stores in my area keep the tanks pretty clean. I buy my food and some of the other things I need for my fish (including my 29 gallon tank) from WM; the nearest store other than WM that sells fish, food and supplies, etc. is at least 60 miles from where I live.

Here's a picture of a 6 gallon aquarium from Wal-Mart.com. Now class, other than that cheesy looking lighthouse, what's wrong here?

I hate you people complaining all the time..Pretty soon, Wal-mart is going to stop selling fish food and stuff like that because all you PETA freaks..

Kmart sells fish food and dosent sell fish.

so i did it. i know i know. first rule of fish keeping is to never buy fish from wal-mart. diseased parasitic fish and so on. ...but i did it.

i just wanted to cycle my tank so i bought like 15 feeder fish (30 g tank). well, i am down to like 8 now about 3/4 days later. i am pretty sure that there is some sort of disease or parasite, but i am not sure if it will matter once i take them all out.

so, i quest: what precautions do i need to make before i put my real fish in?

PETA freaks? There is a difference between overreacting and simply reacting strongly to a bad situation..

Ok, if you freak out over a Petco or a local fish store that has some bad fish, that's one thing.. but Walmart is just plain bad with their fish, any strong reaction is fully justified.

It would be like shoving a dog in a box, sitting it on the shelf and only throwing in a handful of dog food for it each day with the once every two week box cleaning. Now, if they did that people would freak.. even the ones who aren't "PETA freaks".

I'm a fisherman.. I love fishing. I hook a live fish and let it swim around with a **** hook running through its guts so I can catch another fish that I behead, gut and eat.. I feel no guilt killing two dozen minnows to catch a single two pound catfish..
I'm definitely not a PETA freak. Many people from this site would say I'm cruel, PETA would like to see someone like me dead (they also hate pet owners of any kind) but even considering my summertime hobbies I still think Walmart is out of line with their fish.. they need to either close them down or hire someone (all they would need is one person to take care of the aquariums) that knows what their doing for each store.

If you don't care about the welfare of the fish, fine.. what about the unsuspecting customers that get ripped off by Walmart? When I first got into the hobby I bought a Pictus from Walmart that ended up killing off my entire aquarium with ich.

and why in God's name do you think this has anything to do with fish food? Every grocery store in this town sells fish food.... ?

I agree with you, that you can care about animals suffering and not be a PETA freak. Personaly I dont fish, but it dose look fun. I just dont want to cause the fish any pain just because its fun for me. If there was a way to put something on the hooks so the fish did not feel it, then I would fish.

What do you meant they hate pet owners of any kind? PETA wants animals to be well cared for. Domesticating animals have caused problems. There is an overpopulation problem. So many dometicated animals get put down because they are unwanted. Alot of pets that do have homes are misstreated and abused. I dont think PETA is aginst having pets, the are aginst the mistreatment of pets and the suffering of unwanted domesticated animals.

That's most likely a manufacturer's image supplied by Marineland, and not the fault of Wal*Mart. I bought a similar setup from Meijer a couple of years back made by Penn Plax... It was probably a 6 or 7 gallon tank, but I swear the box showed like 30 fish swimming happily in the lushly planted tank.

This is what I would do. Just treat the feeder like you would your real fish. Check their symptoms and what not so you can address the problem. Then once the feeders are fine you know how to deal with it. And give your real fish a dose of what ever you treated the feeders with just to ward off anything.

You need to see this, posted by Corbin on another thread....there is language that you may find offensive, but it is not as offensive as the hypocrisy exposed....

A few months ago my local walmart (Virginia) had all of their had severe cases of ich. The puffers looked soo sad. My boyfriend taped a large sign saying your fish have parasites >Do not buy, when there weren't any attendants around. Was this effective...I doubt it but I guess it made him feel better.
