Water softener and African Cichlids...

Definitely! Is there any chance of petsmart or bigals price matching the online USA bigals store?

i can save alot of money on the test kit and new filter for the cichlids. Look at the price difference from the US store and the Canadian store. Do you think my Big Als or petsmart will price match the USA store?

Almost definitely no. The difference in price cross-border(USA<->Canada) isn't soley based on our relative currency trading. The fact that canadian companies buy in far less volume than american ones(as a whole) means that goods just cost more here. You're not likely to see a whole lot of price "matching" for that reason, it's just not profitable.

Crushed coral doesn't usually get pH above 7.6 or so. In your tank it wouldn't help. But yes, if you are going to use it I would use it as the last step in a canister filter.

My PH is around 7.9- 8. is that waters PH going to remain that way in the tank OR will it decrease naturally on it's own and require me to have a buffer ? what sand is safe for african tanks ? or even a tetra tank for that matter ?

pH isn't the important thing. KH and GH are. If the KH is high, that's fine. If the KH is low, and your pH is only high because the water company puts alkali in it, then you'll have problems.

:help:that sounds like a good plan and i will do that. I got some info. from the dayton, nevada water company where i live and heres what it says " ALL OF LYON COUNTY WATER IS GROUND WATER, and the water is blended throughout the distribution system so hardness varies by location.
DAYTON SOUTH- HARDNESS >>>>>PPM GRAINS
197 -------11.59
DAYTON NORTH 374------- 22.00

CANYON ESTATES -- 236------ 13.88

DAYTON VALLEY ESTATES 506------ 29.76

i BELIEVE WE are in the canyon estates at 236 hardness ppm grains 1388

we just moved here and i know we get water spotting and white crusty deposits on our sprinkler drip system lines.
I just want to do the best for the fish i decide on as soon as i start up my 100 Gal. it's driving me batty waiting like i have to but like i said, i want to get the best fish for the water i have so i don't have to mess with chemicals if it can be avided.
thanks for the help !

There are some things that can build up over time that can lower the pH, but if this happens you are doing far from enough water changes. Yours sounds good to go. Just check it every once in a while.
