Water softener and African Cichlids...

Thanks ! Thats why i was thinking of going with a sand that would also buffer a little. but not sure what kind to get, i want a light color.

I just use a black and white mix of Estes' Marine Sand. Pics on my Photobucket page.

Alright, I would like to say I just brought a new test kit, however, I could not find the gh and kh one. I'll post what I currently have in a bit.

What should I be aiming for?

For pH?
Anything from 7.6 up to around 8.6 would be great for Lake Malawi cichlids.

Well, I don't have a gH and kH test kit, I brought the API one and it did not come with one, anyway, the tests were great.

Ammonia - O
Nitrite- O
Nitrate 5-10
pH - about 7.9

Is the gH and kH one absolutely necessary? If so, I'll get the Hagen one.

I want to trade my Angelfish and cories asap, and get some yellow labs. I suppose the Labs can adapt? I mean it should be ok for now right? The water *might* not be 100% suitable but at least the pH range is good.

KH usually determines pH, so if the pH is high and staying that way then the KH is almost certainly high as well (at least high enough). That sounds like great water to put Malawian cichlids in.

those perimeters sound good for mbuna i would get a GH test kit just for peace of mind but i do agree with what reptileguy stated above on the PH but you never know aye..
