Welcome to the Brackish Forums! Puffer threads go in this forum, as new threads

Well they will not take the shark back, they said they have a 3 day return policy and that is only if they are sick or die. He tried ti tell me that there is no way they can get that big in an aquarium!!! He said they only way they get that size is in their natural habitat, I told him even if that is true it can't be good for the fish. I did read on one of the threads that they may not grow but their insides still do and it is very hard on the fish, I tried to explain that to him but he wouldn't listen, I told him he should really consider not selling them because no one should have a fish like that for a inside tank. Oh and I asked him why thier discription on the tank say's they only get between 6-8 inches because and he said well if someone has a 10-20 gallon tank that is all the bigger they will grow because they wont out grow their habitat, so needless to say I guess I am going to keep the fish for now untill they do get to big then I'm not really sure what I will do, but I'll figure out something they are fresh water right? Because my cousin knows someone that has an outside pond with those really big gold fish (don't know their name) but she said maybe if I talk to her she would take them once they are to big, would that be something they could handle? I'm not sure what she does in the winter though.

Thanks again for your help,

Ginger

That's a shame. Did you speak to the owner? I sure hope with that kind of ignorance, that will be last time you step foot in there!

Yeah, I don't think I will be going back there, it is sad how some people only care about the sale, not what they are selling! I forgot I did ask him also why his sales person would of told my son they were all BW fish and then sell him the wrong type of salt to make it BW his answer....they are all tropical fish so they can survive in BW or FW and the aquarium salt is all you need!! Both my columbians have died now, but hey the irridesent are thriving. I have to admit I do love watching them they are so active they crack me up I will hate when I have to get rid of them, but I'm not going to keep a fish that I will in the long run knowingly hurt. Wow just think I just typed in to find out about a puffer I liked and look how far this thread has went. If nothing else I have learned a great deal out of this experience and I have told my son NO MORE FISH unless we can look them up and know EVERYTHING about them in advance!!

Thanks so much for everything
Ginger

Just a quick update, my cousin talked to her friends mom and she said that if they make it to at least a foot long she would take them, she wants them to be at least 1' b/c she is afraid her other fish will eat them.
Thanks again!

Yes we get winter here, and I did ask about that, she has a set up in her basement she keeps them in the winter! Boy did I (and the fish) luck out or what!! Of coarse I won't be getting anything for them but at least I know they will be fine as long as I can maintain them till they are the size she wants them to be.

1 last update

Ok I have one last update here, since this forum is suppose to be for puffers, I FOUND A HOME FOR THE IRRIDESENTS!!!! A friend of mine has a 125g tank and he took them to keep until they are big enough to go to the pond life!!!!

Hello I just set up a 25 gal tall tank. I have a figure eight puffer and a knight goby in it .
I have had them in there for about three weeks. I was not sure how much sea salt to add to the tank. I put in 2 tblsp when I set it up. I was reading that figure 8 live in freshwater but live longer and are less likely to get sick in brackish. I have also read that knight gobies live in brackish/freshwater in mangroves. So how much salt is necessary. I have no way to measure it. I looked at some salt water meters and they do not go low enough to read brackish. The puffer seems to be doing fine and has even got a little bigger since I have got him. The knight goby appears have lots of energy and does alot of swimming up and down the side of tank. Is this normal behavior or could he be stressed. I haven't seen the puffer and gobie get into ay battles and both fins look fine. They have plenty of space in the tank. There is a piece of driftwood with rocks and a bunch of java moss so they both have plenty of places to hide. I also have a otto in there I have read that these can live with a puffer and they do not even notice each other in the tank. I did a little reading on ottos and it says they do not like salt in there water. any suggestions. Just ramblin on this is my first brackish tank. any suggestion on anything will be appreciated..thanks rob
