What Do You Feed Your Dog(s)?

my dogs eat a raw prey model diet. we try, using various animal parts to mimick what a wolf would eat in the wild, because after all, all our companion dogs are is selectively bred gray wolves.

nothing ground or commericially prepared. no fillers, no grains, and the only veggies they get are when they beg and get to lick our dinner plates (not very often).

unfortunately i don't have a way to post pics at the moment, my digital camera takes pics on floppy disks and the new computer doesn't have a floppy drive. and of course, all the pics i already have are on the old computer's hard drive that has a nasty virus.

As soon as i get an external floppy drive i'll post pics of my dogs.. and my fish which are also raw fed.

Dogs are not wolves. They have been bred through hundreds of years and are very different from wolves. Their teeth are not strong enough to break bone and will chip and wear if fed animal bones. They need carbs, not just animal meat. Veggies are also needed, though in a less amount. Feeding your dog nothing but raw meat will result in a shorter life span. Yes, feeding nothing but raw meat mimics a wolfs diet, but wild wolves live a significantly shorter life than domestic dogs because they eat nothing but raw meat.

"If pet owners were willing to accept mortality rates similar to wild canines for their pets there would be a lot fewer long term disorders of any type, not just food related ones. The average lifespan of a wild canid is very short compared to that of a pet dog and the same is true of feral felines. We deal with many of the problems of aging in pets because of the success of pet foods and improved health care. They don't live in a natural situation and for the most part they are probably better off because of that." (Mike Richards, DVM)http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/drawmeat.html

Actually, wolves do eat fruits in the wild, just not in very large quantities. They'll pick up a fallen piece of fruit to eat here and there. And I've seen wolves in captivity trying to pick blackberries. Some of them really go crazy for things like watermelon and cantaloupe.

I feed my dog the new pan diet Freshpet Select, it is not cooked per say but pasturized, it has the benifits of the raw diets without the fear of parasites being introduced, they have Chicken, Turkey and Beef, they contain no preservitives and must be kept in the fridge and have a 14 week shelf life. My dog Molly is an Aussie Shepherd 17 years old before changing to this diet she was unable to go up and down stairs, after having been on this diet she goes up and downstairs without any problems and even went swimming at our camp last weekend. If you have any interest Freshpet has a web site that tells about their products.

My dog likes to eat watermelon!

Not completely true. Domestic animals live longer lives because of the lifestyle too. They do not have to hunt for their food, they do not have to live outdoors (well most anyway), they do not have to starve during sparse seasons.

I feed my dog raw chicken and beef, cooked eggs plus "Go" dry food. I rotate the flavor of the dry food (salmon, duck, veggies). My dog eats better than we do! When we go huckleberrry picking in the late summer, my dogs eats the berries right off the bush.

Bettagurl, what you are feeding your dogs sounds like a great diet to me! I try to give my dog cod liver oil pills but I always find them around the house spit out! :)

I general stick to better quality kibble and a bit of whatever I have. And I have a 9 year old dog that my new vet guessed was 4 or 5.

I feed my dog medi-cal, a no grain food made with sweet potato and duck.

We were feeding Canadiae (or however you spell it) til it went up to about 50 or so bucks a bag. We have switched to a similar holistic food called Premium Edge. My little pug is extremely allergic to corn (which is more common than you think). He starts getting weepy eyes and starts sounding really congested.

That's an odd reaction, usually it affects the bowels and gut or shows as a skin reaction first.
