most people can't believe how smart rats are. i have to say, i think the rats are better trained than my dog! i have taught them to "stand" (stand up on their hind legs), come (run over to me from across the room), "go to bed" (run into their cage after playing on the desk), "leave it" (when they are annoying the cat), and a cool game where i put a dixie cup on a string and hang it off their cage. they then pull up on the string (a good 8" pull) to get the treats.

I have heard lots of good things about rats being very intelligent, and that they bond very well with their owners. I just can't get past the ewww factor of them. I ended up compromising with my son and let him get a pair of female gerbils. They may not be the most intelligent rodents, but they seem smarter than a hamster and they are much more friendly and entertaining then hamsters. And now that I have gotten used to their tails, I even think they are adorable. Who knows, maybe I could deal with a rat some day after these two little angels. Our gerbils are silver w/red eyes and black w/black eyes and white patches on it's feet. Names are Elizabeth and Samanatha =)

my aunt worked with rats, and has one for a pet
they are indeed smart
