Thought I had ich on my German Blue Rams. So I cranked the tank temp to 86*. Next day “ich” was gone. 2 days later, temp still at 86*, “ich came back. But it is still only on the rams. I also have angels, Cory cats, and BN Plecos. So now, I’m not sure what I’m dealing with. If it were ich, it shouldn’t have been able to reattach at that temp and would have been on other fish. What am I dealing with here? They have been flashing some, but otherwise appear normal. D778E2F6-5A7F-4407-929C-8BA64D1BC8E6.jpeg

I think I just figured it out. My tank was at 84* despite the heater being set at 86* I moved my thermometer so I could see it better. I’ve turned the temp up. Hopefully this works.

Yeah, that's ich all right.
The Rams should have no problem with the elevated temperature.
The other fish will be stressed.
Did you also add salt?

I have not added salt. I don’t have aquarium salt here in town. Also I have plants. From my understanding heat alone should take care of it correct?

Oops, I answered in your other thread. Table salt, even iodized, is fine to use but don't mess around waiting. This looks worse than your other pic.

Plants don't like salt but should be fine with an ich treatment.

There's a sticky on ich treatments at the top of the newbie forum. It's not a tx I use enough to know, check! But start adding it tonight!! Maybe 1/3 dose tonight, 1/3 in am & 1/3 in pm. Or over 3 days, any level of salt will start to help. Remember to treat long enough to be entirely sure it's gone for good. 7-10 days after all signs are gone.

Salt doesn't damage your beneficial bacteria, so no worries about that. Nor dose carbon remove it . I don't use carbon on a regular basis, but if it's in your filter just leave for now.

Like plants, catfish including plecos don't like salt, but a lot of that is the rapid rise in TDS (total dissolved solids). That's why you want to add salt slowly over a couple days & remove it slowly too. If the fish seem very stressed, I would keep the temp lower than 86F, that's awfully high for most cats & just as stressful as the salt or almost. The tx might take a few days longer but, to me, it's safer.

You might also lower the water level so there's a good splash from your HOB filter, vacuum! Ich often hides in the gills & can reduce a fish's ability to get enough oxygen. The ich, salt or lack of oxygen can all cause some flashing, that's just them scratching an irritation.

Signs of a more serious reaction to temp & lack of oxygen is hanging at the surface; gill irritation, red gills or non-stop flashing.

Oops again, I didn't see the ich tx dosage on the newbie forum. I did a very quick google, but not an AC, search & it's 1 to 3 teaspoon/gallon. I was thinking it was more like 1 Tablespoon/5 or 10 gallons of actual water volume. But add it slowly over a couple days, see the TDS thing I mentioned. You can start with say, a Tablespoon/10g today & add more over a few doses.

But start NOW! This is more than a "light" case of ich, although not as bad as it can get.

I just added 8 tsp. As long as everyone does well I will add more tomorrow. I got non iodized table salt(it’s what the dollar store had).
