Yes DrVader, I do take precautions. I'm very careful with it, but I think it's a good all-purpose thing. I definitely would not recommend to anyone who wasn't going to very very careful and precise and accurate about it.
This reminds me a little bit of my dad getting A's in Advanced Physical Chemistry in university in the '40's with a pencil and paper because he couldn't afford a slide-rule, while a lot of his friends with slide-rules failed.
I'd like to make the point that there are lots of ways to do this hobby with good results. That the right way to do things is some shade of gray. That there are no aquarium police who are going to test your water. That it's more important to understand what's going on then to have every new gadget.
And BTW  I always have started my siphon to change water with my mouth......................and my dog eats off my spoon too. And I'm not dead yet.
I think it's great for newcomers to learn good habits, but that doesn't mean that you can't have healthy tanks with different or older or obsolete habits!
I must say that the most important part of this hobby is to be a responsible fish keeper. Making sure that you are giving each species what it wants and needs and not being afraid to admit when you are wrong. There is also no crime in asking for help, we all make mistakes. Oh yeah..................you also need to have fun and enjoy. Oh and btw always buy the groceries before you buy more fish.
LOL I too start suction with my mouth and my dog eats off of my spoon too! I have been known to try dog biscuits just to see what they are like.I, too am perfectly fine *twitches* and, I eat carrots after the horses..it goes a bite for you, a bite for me! that is after I wipe horse spit off of the carrot! I DO have standards!
and, even tho I am a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl, my fish are healthy and have had not one death since last summer
