Krylon fusion gloss black spray is what I and some other people have used. Looks good, cheap, and easy to do. Hit it with 4 of 5 coats with dry time between and it'll make everything stand out real nice in there.
 
I completely understand with the cichlids and the salad :-) Just wanted to give you some food for thought with the article. Painting it shouldn't have any effects on your tank then. However, painting a piece of carboard and cutting it to fit on the glass between the top and bottom trim accomplishes the same goal and allows for more versatility in the future.

But like everything else in this hobby...to each their own...so do as you please and enjoy! Can't wait to see the progression of this tank.
 
DEFINATELY paint the background either black or blue/gray

and it honestly doesnt matter what kind of paint you use

I have used cheap wal-mart spray paint with the same results as better paint


rocks look sweet-- makes me wanna go to my rockyard and see what I can find

Haha, I like that quote even better, lol. I appreciate the input on painting, honestly. Like I had mentioned prior, I had only thought of latex paint due to the alleged ease of removal from what I researched on others here. If I painted with regular, is there a moderatley easy way to remove it? In the future was was planning on making this tank a two sided wall viewable, that was the reason for trying do do something not permanent. I will post better pics when I find my Nikon.

You think I whould add more black limestone, or stay with what I have until I paint the background to see where I stand?
 
I'd do the background first. I'm partial to painting the glass simply because the materials used for other methods make contact with the glass in some places and not in others, giving an inconsistant look to it, not to mention if you use a material that discolors or looks darker wet, then a little water down the back of the tank can make the whole thing look a wreck. And paint comes off the glass easily with a razor blade if you want to change things up later. Just my prefference and the reasons for it. Each to their own, as they say.
 
okay well if it is a glass tannk i would highly suggest latex paint...
why?
because when you paint around a window and get paint all over the glass and you wait and let it dry you simply take a razor blade and scrape it off with no scratching or anything. it is the perfect deal.

why do i say thiss with such confidence?
becaause i have done it before.
also, my father has formulated 90% of the latex paints in the paint industry.......

Your white rock is going to stand out, of course.. but a black background against that dark rock is going to make that look awesome. Beautiful tank setup!
