when you have a tank that is meant for a dry set up (reptiles for example) is it ok to fill it with water?

i have a 20 long that was made for reptiles and the sticker on the inside says "do not fill with water".

Does it say that because they do not take extra precautions to make it water safe, or does it really not work with the weight of water?

if it doesn't work, is it typically because of the glass thickness, or the silicone? im wondering if i could just reseal it perhaps and save the money on another tank..

i think the glass is thinner and they wont assume any legal risks if you use water in it, and get injured.

They dont put stickers on for no reason.

Chances are the glass is thinner and the tank is not braced for the weight of the water.

I suggest you follow the stickers advice.

thanks guys
Unfortunately, everybody in my area has this notion in their head that their 20 gallons are worth 80 to 100 dollars used. i can't find anything cheap :E

thanks for the info though. i guess its no tank for now

You can get a brand new 20 long at petsmart for less than $40, people think used tanks are worth a fortune around here too. There are atleast 2 10 gallon tanks on craigslist in my area for over $100, neither have a stand or decent filter.

I live in an area where used tanks are crazy expensive. But there ARE deals on craigslist, no matter where you live. I did finally come across a couple good deals, and was able to snag one of them (75 gal for $100). Took me a few months to find one, but well worth it. If you aren't in dire need ASAP of the tank, you may hang out on craigslist and possibly kijiji.com too. Both tend to have decent deals at least on a semi-regular basis.

Moving sales, garage sales, etc also tend to have smaller tanks (less than 55 gal) that are sold cheap.

Good luck. :)

Thanks guys :) i have zero cash lol so i may see if my dad will get me one for my bday.
18 and still mooching off my parents lol

just made a free cycle account too so with luck something will turn up :)

thanks guys

But the more I look,I do see deals from time to time.Check Craigslist often, and before long a descent deal will come along.
