Even if you cut the legs off, the upright supports in the dresser are not made for holding that kind of weight. You need something with solid vertical support around the body of the tank and a larger footprint on the floor. Although there are some vertical supports in the dresser, they are mainly for holding the drawer slides. They are not usually attached well and may buckle.

The other this is, that's a nice looking dresser. I don't know that it's worth damaging it when a simple fish tank stand out of 2x4 (although pretty but functional) is not very much.

The supports under the dresser are very thick and go around like the perimeter of the stand. (they are almost 3" thick, 3" tall, and run around the whole dresser base. My dad still wants to do this.

I will probably just make one/get one made, and just use that.:)

I just sold the stock 48" light with 2 24"X12.5" black plastic tops to a guy with a 55G for $45.00!:D
My dad is paying some money for the stand (that will be made/bought).

Do you think this can support a 72 gallon tank filled with water with 140lbs of gravel, the 50lbs tank, 40lbs of decor, a 10lb light fixture, 50lbs of filters, and supplies.

I have a dresser as the stand for my 40g. But the dresser is about 4.5' long so the tank fits it pretty nicely.

The thing is the length of that dresser and the weight of the tank. If the dresser fit the tank better, or very nearly fit the tank then you could maybe do it. But you are putting the full weight of the tank on the dresser's weakest point. I'd be more worried about the whole thing failing and dropping the tank right down the middle. Taking the legs off won't help that. It may theoretically be able to handle the weight, but not entirely centered on the area designed to hold up drawers.


Granted it would depend on the age of the dresser. If it is old then the wood would probably hold up, but it'd still warp and risk a tank failure. But if it is that old, then you probably wouldn't want to take a saw to it to begin with.
 
Also, the website says that the stand is not made of wood!!!
It is made of dense fiberboard construction?
Has anybody used this type of stand before?
Sounds like it will collapse easily if not made entirely of wood.:(
 
Go look at stand plans and make your own out of real wood. It'll make you feel a lot better about the work put in, and you can secure it and make sure its very strong. Thats expensive for something made out of fake wood.
 
I have a stand for my 75 gal tank made from that type of wood. Got it from petsmart 2 yrs ago. I haven't had any issues yet.
